OK, I had to post the results of the Bring-a-Trailer auction for the 1976 Toyota Celica:

https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1976-toyota-celica-4/

Yes, you read that right. $62,000. Plus the 5% buyer's commission = $65,100.

Sixty five thousand, one hundred dollars.

I've had a few (too many) beers tonight, but still. $65,100.

For a 1976 Toyota Celica fastback.

Notwithstanding the tear-jerker of a story from the buyer about replacing a husband's beloved car, there was another buyer willing to pay $61,000. So the price is not unique.

I totally agree that a 1976 Celica fastback is a neat car. But is it really worth three times the price of a new BRZ/86 (or more than double the price of the nicest Hakone 86 ever sold)?!?!?!

This is not a one-time phenomenon. Check out the prices paid for S2000's lately:

https://bringatrailer.com/listing/20...da-s2000-cr-5/

https://bringatrailer.com/listing/20...a-s2000-cr-26/

https://bringatrailer.com/listing/2009-honda-s2000-4/

https://bringatrailer.com/listing/2007-honda-s2000-52/

The world truly is coming to an end. When people have $65,100 to throw around for a 1976 Toyota Celica - or over $100,000 for a Honda S2000 - it's The End of Days.

There really is insanely too much money sloshing around out there. The previous times this happened in history, things didn't end well.

These type of things are making my dreams of owning a Nissan Silvia S15 even more impossible.

OR...

You could ignore BringATrailer which seems to have become the playground of the stupid and search elsewhere.

Mind you any car from 1976 is going to be hard to find, but just by searching Google for 1976 Toyota Celica Fastback I was able to find several sites that had them listed for a more "reasonable" price although they may not be "factory fresh".

This one is sold but was listed for $15,995

Here's one for $10,400.

This, but more like there is too much money in the hands of the few. Tax the rich and wealthy.

Completely, totally, enthusiastically agree (if I was more sober and in better command of language when I posted last night, would have made similar clarifications),

Buy one in Japan now.
Importing them early is fine.
Wait till it's legal to register.

I agree, but... we're talking about a nearly 50 year old Celica in really good condition. That's super rare/hard to find these days.

And the S2000 never sold that well in the US (about half the sales of the FR-S/BRZ) and on top of that, the one that sold for over $100k was a pristine, barely driven example of the even lower selling, even more expensive CR version.

I think we're seeing supply/demand at work and, like you said, people with nostalgia and money. I think it's pretty clear that if it wasn't for the nostalgia and lack of supply (e.g., if these cars were still in production today), they wouldn't sell for anywhere near these prices.

Every time I look at old cars, I notice how they're loud, tinny, smelly, and ugly on the inside. They also need lots of maintenance and collapse in a tiny crash. Then I head over to the new car dealer.

I like this thread. It is a topic I think about frequently. In the end, there is no "right" answer. Everyone has to decide what a car is worth to them and spend their money accordingly.
It is really tempting to buy an older, "cooler" car than the BRZ. I really like the Porsches and BMWs. They're a ton of fun to drive regardless of the nostalgia. But if performance per dollar is important, that fantasy fades quickly. Like someone else said, the BRZ is a better performer than some cars I had posters of on my bedroom wall in 1987. Cars which, at that time, were considered borderline unobtainable.
I think I'll stick with the BRZ and enjoy other people's nostalgia cars.

This ^ So much THIS^

Nostalgia plays with people's memories but what may have been acceptable back then just becomes an annoying nuisance now.
