Vibration after Clutch Replacment - Toyota GR86, 86, FR-S and Subaru BRZ Forum & Owners Community

Hi everyone,

I wanted to get the communities thoughts on my situation after a clutch replacement.

My TOB started making noise so I thought I'd replace the clutch while I'm at it.

After completing the clutch replacement I now have a vibration that seems to be rpm dependent. The clutch engages and disengages normally, shifting is normal. When I push in the clutch and rev the engine there is a vibration.

I had the flywheel resurfaced locally. My thoughts are either the flywheel is out of balance or the pressure plate is. I definitely put some strain on the engine mounts getting the trans off and back on, but I don't think this would be the cause.

I looked for match marks on the pressure plate, but couldn't find any as specified in here. I have not seen any mention matching the flywheel marks to the pressure plate on any other clutch replacement DIYs either.

Is there anything else this could be before I begin this process all over again?

Measured .015" of runout on the flywheel today. Spec per the manual is .0039".

I will measure the new flywheel when I put it on tomorrow. Hopefully the new flywheel will be in spec.

Yeah, I thought I bumped the indicator at first. Went around 2 full times, same result.

Video showing .013" runout on the flywheel on a surface plate. My previous measurement was on the car which could have had two other sources of runout. 1) Crankshaft runout. 2) Flywheel mounting issues. This confirms the flywheel was machined incorrectly. The readings on the indicator climb very steadily and drop steadily. There is a high side and a low side. The machining seems quite flat but not parallel to the crankshaft mounting location. This is most likely caused by poor setup in the cutting/grinding machine. They essentially cut the flywheel in a way that it is wedge shaped now.

I was going to say maybe you have debris between the surfaces causing it to be a bit off from rotating true.

Glad you found the problem. The machine shop owes you a new flywheel. Hope it doesn't get ugly. Good luck.

Yeah, I'm gonna try for it, but I'm guessing I'll face some opposition.

If they offer to redo it, I'd turn them down (pun intended). Who knows maybe everything that comes off that machine gets messed up?

Yeah, In my mind they lost the right to redo it when they sent a part out the door and clearly did not check to make sure it was correct. You simply can't do machine work without any QC.

I installed a new Exedy flywheel today. Runout when installed on the car was one or two thousandths. I have to refill the trans but I did rev the engine and it felt smoother. Will report back after the test drive.

Put the new flywheel on the other day. Measured roughly .002" runout when installed on the car.

Full disclosure. I had installed the Torque Solutions polyurethane transmission insert along with the clutch and resurfaced flywheel the first time. Of course I removed the insert before pulling the transmission to put the new flywheel in. On the test drive without the bushing on the resurfaced flywheel, I still felt like there was vibrations.

I put the bushing on again since I had the transmission out for the new flywheel. I was surprised to feel how much NVH the insert added. It's 75A durometer which is softer than the Whiteline insert and many review state no added NVH.

I took the bushing out again and everything is back to normal.

While I certainly re-evaluated the vibration without the bushing on the resurfaced flywheel the bushing insert may have caused me to be more aware of the vibrations than I would have been without it.

As much as this whole situation was completely awful, I'm glad I replaced the flywheel with a new one and confirmed it is in spec. The resurfaced flywheel was 3.75 times over spec. Not to mention it was all on one side.

I don't get how anyone can run any of the transmission or differential bushings on an 86 and not feel a huge difference. I must be getting old; doing the softest trans mount I could find made the vibrations intolerable to me.
