Toyota customer care called me in response to my mail.
Confirmed that we are to use OEM 5w30 and the message has been filtered to there network.
Toyota Hillcrest also made contact to say they serviced there first 86, with no problems. I am due for filter and oil change tomorrow, 7500 km decided to just be safe than sorry. Will change while I wait and plug in ECU to check settings are correct.

Cool, thanks for the info. Went to Woodmead Toyota yesterday and it seems that pretty much none of the dealers have that oil in stock.

The dealer will more than likely only order when you book for a service.
Ask your parts to order for you and they will have delivered next day.

Just come back from the oil change.
I have a history with Toyota, so when I arrived the service manager was waiting, took 30 minutes to change the oil and filter. R905.
This might be my imagination, but the car definitely feels a lot smoother. Got a extra 1l oil for top up.
The oil goes for R95 per liter don't let these dealerships rip you off.
I ask why diesel oil, response is it is fully synthetic and thinner oil for this car.
I went to the sales side to check if they new anything and guess what, they all have a formal notification regarding the oil and to sell a 1l with the car.
Well done to the forum.

Well done!!!!

I think Ford also use "diesel oil" in the ST's. In fact, it's also 5W30 if I'm not mistaken.

The way you going, to get to another 800km, may take you 3 months.

I've eventually had a chance to check my car's oil the right way - cold engine, car standing on a flat surface in the garage. Just under 7000km and it's still on the full mark.

Checked mine yesterday aswell, first with the car cold and then with the engine warm. Both showed full aswell - the latter showed slightly lower but still to the full mark.

Manual says engine should be at running temp when you check it and you have to check both sides of the dipstick. Got my top up oil yesterday. Diesel oil - hysterical!

Strange, I always try checking the oil when the car is cold and all the oil is sitting in the sump. Silly of Subaru to make it the other way around because I wouldn't want to get the engine up to running temp if it was running low on oil.

It's not the first time I've seen that in a Toyota manual either strangely enough. I also believe in checking it when it is cold and settled and have done so with all my cars especially the older ones.
