I'm keen to do a post running in oil change....

Hehe you seem pretty excited @GavinAnt, posting away

Congrats on your baby, now get those km's on so we can see you at the Skidpan at the end of the month!

As for the oil, I wouldn't worry about it too much, until it's time to go for a service. Some folks recommend an oil change before that but I've been checking my oil levels regularly and it's still fine. I guess it doesn't hurt to be cautious though

Thanks but cannot find any here in Durbs? I see Shell now mix 5W30 (instead of 5W40), so looks like that's it.

Can anyone confirm the amount of oil the 86 take?
According to the Toyota TIS is takes 5.4L, I remember someting about 4.7L someone posted before?

Going to get oil changed with 5W30 and TRD filter after an awesome 3000km in just over 3 weeks

Here the 15 000km TIS if anyone can find it useful.

Regular servicing. Excludes maintenance items such as brake pads, wiper blades, top up oil, etc.

I'm at 5000kms now and I need a minor top-up, but I'm reluctant to mix oil grades.

So I've decided to do an oil change to 5w30 which will make me feel much more comfortable.
I might be old-fashioned, but hanging on until 15000kms for a 1st oil change just seems wrong...

Maybe then I'll also have less conscience when I redline her, which happens often.

I was thinking of doing the same , but now I'm thinking maybe its better to leave the thinner 0w-20 in until the end of winter, as it will be better for cold start protection. Or am I wrong about that ?

Oil change 0w20 -> 5w30 done today @ 5300kms by NTT Toyota Barberton.

We sat and waited while it was done which took longer than expected so I guess that they battled a bit with the software upgrade which was done at the same time.

I'm so pleased that I've made the change to 5w30.
When hot after a good hard run, my car used to sound rattley, like it's got too big engineering tolerances, and the oil's too thin - yeech.

This might be first impressions - but today it sounded great after a hot run back from the dealer.
So far I'm a happy chappie, but it's early days yet.
I'll wait and see before passing final judgement.

The dealer made a mistake and replaced the air filter which I didn't ask for.
Full marks for NTT Toyota Barberton - when I said "ahem, there's a problem", the R500 air filter remained in my car, but disappeared off my bill in minutes.
Well done NTT Bton. That's why I support a dealer that's not my closest to home...

I had the opportunity to have a good look under my 86 today while it was on the lift.

I want to do camber bolts in front to dial in about 0.5° neg camber to match the existing approx 0.6° neg camber I have at the rear.
Looks quite straightforward, so I'm going to go ahead and order the bolts.

I've decided that I'm not going to lower my car - the haters who say "the wheel gap!!" must carry on hating...
Having seen how flimsy the underbody protection is (plastic and thin alum), and respecting the crap state of our roads, I'll rather stay the 1" higher.

I had a good look at the exhaust system today.
Having heard what a stock 86 sounds like on Zwartkops raceway recently (terrible) - I'm going to do something to make some more (good) noise.
But I can assure that that I ain't paying R20K for a TRD muffler.

'n Boer maak 'n plan - watch this space....
