Honda Sports EV Concept: Should They Build It?

Quote:
Honda seems to have the right idea on how to make an electric car, judging by their second attempt with the Sports EV concept.

Following the really handsome Urban EV concept that debuted at the last Frankfurt Motor Show, the new Sports EV concept retains the clean look of its sibling, only now it throws some classic sports-car proportions into the mix.

The concept is about the same size with the Mazda MX-5 and features a long bonnet and a cabin that sits closer to the rear axle while adopting a sloping roofline that meets the rear end in true Jaguar-E-Type style.

Sadly Honda didn’t reveal the technical details of their new concept, saying only that the Sports EV combines “a highly responsive electric power unit” with an “easy to handle compact body”.

There’s also a “Honda Automated Network Assistant” onboard that’s based on AI technology in order to create a better connection between the driver and the car. Honda is currently developing a new dedicated EV platform which will underpin the company’s upcoming electric models, with the first one being the production version of the Urban EV concept in 2019.

Having the platform ready and waiting means that the chances of actually seeing the Sports EV concept reaching production are quite good, with rumors talking about a launch around 2020. If you want a cool electric alternative to the Miata, this might be your lucky day.

if it had a rear diffuser similar to the new mustangs (just simpler) and a more rounded front grill/headlight area like the Dodge Challenger, I would lovvveee it. Still interested though!

This EV concept car's front fenders owe more to the S2000 than 86 IMO. Twins fenders have to arch up much higher because struts...

I think it looks great for the concept. I would definitely be into a reasonably priced sport coupe hybrid that didn't suck.

I'm not a hatch fan, but I love this design, which came out close to the concept. If I wanted a daily to supplement the 86 that was an EV then I would consider this at the top of my list.

<3 They look like toys that have been been hit with a grow-ray.

They are never going to build a S2000 successor or 86 competitor, but at least we could have this and I bet it would be relatively affordable.

My long term goal once I own a house is a small peppy and guilt free EV commuter to supplement my gas burning weekend car habit. I don’t care about range if all it is doing is taking me from my hypothetical home to work and back. This would be absolutely perfect. And would look great sitting a little bit low on some watanabe style wheels. But it’ll never come to the US, just like the other cool small EVs (like the ID3)

I think this was a great video. Thanks for sharing, I'll watch other videos of this guy..

I do like hatches, I do like small cars, and I loved this one. It's even better than the first concept designs. A Type-R version of this car, would be a dream car for me.

French's also made a very nice design lately:

A GTI version of this one

Yaris gr4 is also great.. And Suzuki Swift sport.. I even loved the new Hyundai i10..Man what is happening to me..

wait.. my car looks way better than these..

This is how you get me into the EV game....something interesting.

I'd be scared of the plethora of screens inside though...

Anyone find it backwards that instead of having side mirrors that use 0 electricity, they put cameras in its place and screens to project that image that use electricity in an all electric car where range is at a premium and any electricity savings could be a boon?

May not use alot of electricity for those things but it has to be on full time for proper function.....

If they had made it a full-on Honda CVCC retro, I would have liked the design better. This one looks too much like a toy to me.

Regardless, I'm not the target audience for this even if it was coming to the US anyway. It's range doesn't even cover my daily commute with a margin of error.

I agree with @Sasquachulator about the cameras, although I would say there is a slim possibility that the aero improvement from using the side cameras offsets the electric use.

Range is pretty pathetic for the money they want to charge for this.

Chris Harris reviewed the Honda E on a recent Top Gear. The full review isn't avaliable yet but there are a couple of snippets.

About the range (personally he's wrong, the range sucks on a NEW EV, particularly for this price).

and a follow-up discussion that covers most of what he says when driving it.

In the end, I don't really care for it but I can see where some folks do. I would have liked it when I was in my 20s and was driving my Civic CVCC wagon which I loved.
