Paint Thickness Measurements, Galaxy Blue

Roof of car, this is in the lower area, the raised area is thicker by 20-30%

Hood of car

Front Bumper, nice and thin

Driver Side Mirror, nice and thick, also horrendous orange peel

Overall, the car was between 100-140 microns.

Marc @ AutoLavish is describing the paint as phenomenal quality and some of the thickest he has seen in a long time on a new car.

Ferrari's paint sucks

BMW's are in the 100-150 range
CTS-V is in the 130-160 range

Given the fact they use a cera-clear coat their products are incomparable, you dont treat that the same.

@chulooz is right, and even if you do look at paint thickness, ferrari's paint thickness is par with most luxury cars if not better.

http://belladetailing.com/Ferrari2.html

Here you can see the average paint thickness on a 458 italia was 5.4 mils, or 137.2 microns. Lamborghini usually applies the thickest paint but they are also the most inconsistent, ranging from 250 - 700 microns.

Bottom line you can't judge paint quality solely on thickness. All the ft86 members complaining about their numerous paint chips can attest to that

I'm fairly certain Marc @ Auto Lavish is as good as detailers domain.

Yeah i feel like we got good paint. I hit a car by accident (long story but wasnt me it was the fucking wind that swung my door wide open hard) and it left a huge white line on the car and my car just had a tiny little chip along the side of my door like a dot size.

Subaru uses lighter paint coats for weight reduction. Also, Lamborghinis need some addition layers of protection from stone chips at 190mph...

What's the thickness of the Subaru paint around the rocker panels - say about the height of an orange cone? That's probably where we need it most.

Thanks for posting this! I'm sure they aren't going to be the same across the board, but it's good to at least get an idea.

I wonder how much wet sanding we could get away with to try and reduce the heinous amount of orange peel present on these cars...

The paint quality on these cars is shit. my 1996 mustang and my 2004 corolla have fewer paint chips than my car that has only 6000km on it

@DetailersDomain input?

Not Subaru paint in general. BRZ paint.

I've got an adhesion test kit at work if someone wants to scratch up their paint to find out what adhesion quality it comes in at?

I've only got a chip or two in my paint on the hood where there isn't clear film installed. No big deal, it's a car, it's meant to be driven!
