I've never driven a Prelude, so I'm not sure how fun they are, but what about this for your friend?

Shrug. Meh. Boring. Too many doors.
It'd make a decent beater to slide around in with a couple suspension tweaks and crap tires but that's about the only fun thing I can think of, I think he'll be disappointed compared to the Golf R upon driving it.

I don't think anybody mentioned the 350Z, Z3M would be another good suggestion if he's got some personal issues preventing him from getting a Miata. IS300 has excellent suspension and more torque than an 86 but with an extra ~500 lbs to lug around won't be that exciting if the Golf R is boring him imho. It gives the E36 M3 and E46 non-M a run for their money though.
@FirstWinter pretty much hit all the reasonable suggestions though, good job on that post. I like the idea of a Boxster as a temporary replacement if my 86 got totaled just to try something moderately different.

"Fun to Drive" is the kicker, what the hell does that mean and what does the Golf lack that he's looking for? We're all assuming something rawer, lighter, more communicative, but that's because we bought 86's, maybe he should just trade the Golf in for a Camaro SS/Mustang GT? Maybe a stripped out modded Integra GSR or CRX or EG Civic is the ticket, who the fuck knows.

If the budget goes up to $20k the Corvette enters the equation. Trade the R for a GTI DD and pick up a Corvette as a second car?

Sounds to me like he is actually looking for a commuter and should keep the Golf R as his fun weekend car?
I have no idea. He listed those criteria and then got all psyched about a 16 year old BMW sedan?

No idea. hahah. He's driven my car, so he knows how awesome twins are. But used ones are above his "budget" I guess. He already went over and drove the BMW and said "The clutch felt smooth, engine felt great and the suspension/steering felt super solid."

I'd say don't expend any more effort on this, guys. I'll let you know what he ultimately ends up with.

Of course, but those weren't listed as requirements. Miata easily deserves to be listed alongside the S2K and Z3.

They may be the bestest little sports car in the world and I would still have zero interest in them.

Zira sums up my sentiments perfectly.

I get that. Again, in the context of the RfCandidates, Miata stands tall.

You know better then that! Even if we all stopped today somebody will revive the thread and a few months to say "get a XXX because they are best".

Car groups are so funny. Anytime someone asks the MR2 Spyder facebook about getting a FRS/BRZ/86 everyone loses their shit.

The best ones are when they complain that it's slow. I'm like, you realize the MR2 is just as slow but feel fast cuz it wants to kill you/sounds like it falling apart at 60+mph right? lol

Cuz it's a wagon. And that's the only reason I'll let the fact that it's a Benz slide lol.
