My take is that they won’t be going after tuners who sell aftermarket tunes or products designed to be used to install tunes. If they do that then they would kill motorsports or need an authorization system for teams to buy products for off-road use.

What they will continue to do is go after products and tuners that have made products that are marked as, and are intentionally designed, to allow a person to pass smog by falsifying OBD2 readiness or by putting the car into a lower-power, emissions-dyno mode like what VW got in trouble for years back. The EPA has said that these illegal modifications make a diesel truck have the emissions of 300 trucks.

The EPA or CARB could have already done a lot more, but they haven’t, which says something, and the world is moving to electric fast enough that I don’t know if it a battle worth fighting. They really just want to get these bad apples.

I would agree if not for the EPA fining PFI Speed for simply selling Hondata products.

I'm pretty sure they consider it a cheat device because it is a computer inside the OEM ECU case, which means it would be less detectable under visual inspection if the testing facility wants to do their due diligence. It will allow OBD1 cars to pass emissions from a sniffer and visual. This shop also put up videos of them modifying street cars, I believe.

I guess everyone will either need to save their pennies for CARB products or not buy cheaper cars to modify, but just spend the same amount on car payments for more expensive cars with more horsepowe, or spend the time to convert the cars to stock every few years, or buy new cars every eight years. Like I said, I don't think they will kill motorsports by killing off Motec and Haltech and all performance ECUs. Maybe I'm wrong.

Not to be mean, but your take is incorrect. Big aftermarket companies have already stopped selling tunes, "Offroad use only" isn't a catch all anymore. Look at companies like Flyin' Miata, you can't buy a tune that isn't CARB approved, and that costs $$$$$ to get one approved.

The EPA could do more, and that's exactly what they are starting to do.

Just because we don't like it, doesn't mean it isn't happening.

I’ll have to take your word for what’s changed, as I am not familiar with the product lineup from each manufacturer. I know several places previously sold tuner kits and sold kits with a tune only to later add the CARB tune once approved, but eventually ditched the custom tune for simplicity or maybe because they were concerned about the EPA. Fear could be guiding the behavior you are citing more than anything the EPA has actually done to these companies in the form of audits, fines or cease and desist letters. Meanwhile, other companies continue to sell custom tunes. I can go to DT or APR, to name a few, and see FF kits, ECUs and tunes available. Maybe they are next.

FWIW Orange Virus tuned my Mazda 2 awhile back (~2014?). Zero complaints. Loved that car. Actually made a more fun (and practical) daily then the brz. Gotta have rwd for track stuff though. The 2 was super fun for auto-x and mountain runs.

CSG made an announcement the other day too about it. It's a beta that is going out for testing.

Almost 5 percent. Not bad. I'll bet a good header will get it over the 230 mark and flatten the dip

I'm looking forward to header + E85 results.

The other thing that would be nice to know is if we will be able to flash back to stock for a dealer visit, and not have the dealer be able to see that it's been tuned.
