Legal exhaust setups?

Hi Guys

Recently received my Silver 86 GT manual, of which I absolutely love the styling and the crazy handling / chassis... It really does blow me away as to how well it handles on corners, and how settled it is!!

So happy with the purchase.. lol!

Anyhow, in some small part of me, lives the heart of a hidden and slight attention seeker.. along with that I also do love a good exhaust note.. I mean who doesnt love the sound of a downshifting high revving engine here right? haha...

Given that the stock exhaust is pretty quiet, I'm wondering if there are some decent cat back systems (or just mufflers that are a good replacement) that have less restrictive setups, and are still road legal (i.e. comply with EPA legislation in terms of dB levels etc) so I dont have to worry about being pulled over, but still get a nice note and some minor power gains

Appreciate any info in advance!

Check it out.
Acceleration feels more smooth. Better torque response imo

Thanks mate,

That looks like a sweet set up, for $600 that seems like a pretty darn good price.

Is the setup within EPA limits? I.e. Less than 90db at 4500rpm?

Nice rims too btw, I like the 7 twin-spoke style was thinking of getting something similar.. And Nice choice of car color too hahah

Cheers

Mmmmmm... ok... here we go. There are a few points to consider on this subject.
1/ I am suggesting if you just want a cat-back then a local exhaust shop would be the easiest solution. Cat-backs are straight forward and you can discuss your requirements with them. Also they would be in a position to give you a legal system.
2/ If you went with a cat back from overseas that gave a dB reading you have no idea of how it was measured. If you look at section 3 & 4.2 in the attached pdf you will see that taking a spl reading is very methodical. A reading given by an overseas manufacturer will unlikely be to these standards. Having said that if the reading was something like 87 dB then there is a possibility that it would pass here. (87dB was just used as an example.)

Btw I thought EPA was the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency

Oh lol. Was it you I ran into last Friday on King Georges Road? I was in the Red GTS and we drove up next to each other. You got off Bankstown exit onto Hume.

Also, on topic, I'm looking to get mine done too. There's a massive thread on the Exhaust section. I'd probably look to get one imported and installed.
