#totaled... Literally. The dealership even had a line on a surprisingly cheap replacement engine+tranny but the guy ended up selling it to a friend for pennies.

Shit happens
That is a big ooff.

Is it even possible to get into 1st gear going anything over 5 mph? I thought there was a shift lockout.

Good question: That's just the story I was told. I imagine if you were hooning it trying to impress someone and jammed it in there hard enough you could, but I wasn't in the car or anything. From a mechanical standpoint that's a tad over my head lol.

But Service Managers do love their stories, and that's who I was talking to, so take it with a grain of salt.

Edit:
A cursory Google tells me you may be correct, but lockouts vary wildly by make/model. Also, double clutching might get around it.

Pretty OT but I'd be interested if anyone more knowledgeable chimed in briefly.

That really sucks for the OP, if it’s even a real story. I thought there was a shift lockout for 1st if you are going fast enough? Guess not!
I can understand what NoHaveMSG said about selecting a wrong gear on a track. On the street though it should be easy to avoid. The manual in the twins is so good, it’s very precise. Aside from the 2nd gear synchro which can be temperamental.
But mistakes can happen to anyone, even if you are experienced with driving a manual.
