Do you need oil gauges for tracking

Just got a 86. I have installed the JR oil cooler.

Do I need to install a gauge to monitor oil temperature or is not necessary? Hoping that this is NOT necessary since I put the cooler on.

I run about 12-15 weekends a year, consider my self an intermediate/advanced driver.

You can always buy an OBD II scan tool, hook it up to your phone and monitor temps that way.

You don't "need" them. But it is always nice to know where your temps are. I 2nd the OBDII scan tool and phone app route for starters.

I have one the wireless scan tool modules I can use. Just wasn't sure if most of the track guys were monitoring the oil temperatures each session.

In the three years I’ve tracked my BRZ, I’ve never logged. I just check using my scan tool after a session is finished.

Using ScanTool OBDLink LX Bluetooth...pricey yes. Works perfect.
Its connects to lap timer apps.
Needed in summer texas weather.

The only way to maybe saving your engine is big bright warning lights.

I've use longacre with good success.

Going from good oil pressure to none doesn't take long.

Temps on the other hand are much slower and you can identify a issue if you keep looking at the gauges.

Me, I tend to not pay to much attention to gauges when I'm going balls to the wall.

A big bright light within my field of view will let me know its time to back off, and look at the gauge.

I've considered this route

OP, since I'm in Florida when I ran the BRZ I did run oil temp and oil pressure gauges. I do that in pretty much all my track cars (all except for the Camaro which has some built in but they suck to switch between and use on track - I data log with that car though).

Like it. I will consider. Not expensive.

Did you ever see temps/pressures that forced you to come in early or take it easy on the next lap?

I ended up using one of these for pressure, it has built in warnings as well as an output for external warning light.

With an oil cooler, no. Sometimes pressures in the race car cause it uses oil.
