I hate the waiting game. It's 2012 all over again. I ordered my BRZ in July and have been racking my brain on pulling the trigger on the 86 instead.

You’ll get a BRZ d faster then a 86 at this point. Lol

Sadly nothing to report yet.

AFAIK - first shipments and production allocations went to Subaru. That's about it. Honestly with the driving season in Canada ending so soon, I don't really want my car this year.

MSRP Toyota Preorder

Does anyone know of a Toyota dealership in the Tri-state area (NY/NJ/CT or even PA) that is taking pre-orders at or below MSRP? It seems a lot of people are ordering BRZs for MSRO or even $500-$1000 under MSRP, but the best I have found in this area so far is MSRP + $2000.

My buddy called Subaru of Paramus and toyota (not sure which toyota but close to paramus) and both told him they will sell at MSRP as soon as orders are available.

In upstate NY, my local toyota dealer said as long as I order it with them they will charge MSRP plus any incentives are available (which at this point is just financing).

Weird. Subaru dealerships have been accepting orders for almost 3 months.

I'm guessing this is part of the deal that Toyota gets to launch the marketing first whereas Subaru gets the actual orders to build first. Subaru operates at a much lower marketing budget compared to Toyota so it makes sense for Toyota to do all the heavy lifting when it comes to marketing.

But Subaru revealed the car in November 2020, so they got first marketing too.

The marketing for these cars is and always has been virtually nil. You are currently participating in the bulk of the marketing they will do just by watching the “review” videos and talking about the car.

The BRZs and 86s are built at the same time side by side on the lines. There is no “build first” plan. The variations in availability times will have much more to do with their different pipeline systems and shipping schedules than manufacture dates.

You think the bulk of the delay on the GR86 is because Toyota wanted to change the car’s handling last minute? I’m still not convinced that’s not a marketing narrative being pushed, but being this behind on orders vs Subaru seems like quite the marketing commitment.
