That was me until I moved. Then I got a 65" smart tv for over the fireplace and it is fantastic.

I bought the latest laser disc player with auto flip so I didn't have to turn them from side 1 to side 2 manually. You guessed it. Within a year of getting the newest laser player everyone was selling DVD players and DVD movies were a fraction of the cost of the laser discs they replaced. Now we have blue ray and a 120 hz LED flat panel. Never had a 3D player or TV. I figured 4K would be superseded before I could afford one.
Life was so much simpler when everything was black and white.
4k stuff doesn't seem to have the same pressure as 1080/hd stuff. 8k is almost entirely relegated to obsessive media outlets. i read somewhere a while back that because there's not a significant difference to the general public above hd, it's a lot harder to sell.

the 4k video section at my local target and walmart are both about 5 titles wide, and 10 titles tall. they're never sold out of any 4k movie releases. the 'hd' bluray section is about 4-5 times larger for just new releases, and routinely sold out.

personally, i haven't done anything about going above bluray/hd quality. i go out of my way to attempt to always buy the dvd/bluray combo titles. because i've never had a problem playing a dvd anywhere, but not all blurays play everywhere...

Measure it on the diagonal, it will be bigger, then you will feel better. -

Can't even imagine having one that size in my apartment. My 42 or 43" Vizio is pretty sufficient for the space I have.

The best thing about it, though, is that it's a "dumb" tv. 1080p, no web connection or apps. So no bloat. Can just bring my own system for that stuff.

I'll probably upgrade to a 4k hdr tv though, whenever I move next year.

If your new TV is soo damn "smart", how come it got stuck over a hot fireplace?

(electronics don't like heat)

The only real benefit I've figured out to the apps is you can stream movies and get the surround sound audio. Piping the same movie through a pc seems to only allow 2 channel audio no matter what settings I try.

I have a 'smart tv', and most of the time I prefer to use the pc with it. The controls are more intuitive. And the pc has ad blocker.

However will his house make it to the front page of Home and Garden if it doesn't have a trendy tv above the fireplace?

Gotta pay to play!

Well the fireplace only gets lit as a nice decoration. The hot air goes up the flue, and there isn't too much radiant heat.

If I want to make some serious heat, well that's what the wood stove in the basement is for.

Well, then, then, then, why didn't we ever put radios on the mantel over the fireplace? - answer me that -

Yeah, an apartment (at least the ones I used to live in) would look a bit silly with anything over 50". I know because I remember somebody had a 60 something and it made the room seem small lol. We did run our old sub-40 one in the new living room for a few months. It looked kind of lost in the room.

I originally thought the same way about smart tvs, but 1, I had to either use the tv mount the previous owners left me or fill the holes in the wall above the fireplace, and 2, most nicer/larger tvs nowadays are "smart" TVs and 3, I figured I would give it a shot since I was going the 'stream everything' route. I got a TCL running Roku. I can say it's UI is better than a fire stick at least, which is what I have set up with my old TV.

Because small radios were for small rooms like the kitchen or bedroom. Everyone wanted a floor model for their main living area.

Imaging having a stereo instead of a TV as the primary source of entertainment in a living room, and actually listening to albums from start to finish. So much more engaging and satisfying, imo.

We basically did that at my in-laws a few times. I'll take the tv.
