More likely they didn't want to send several new models for the destructive testing.
Keeping the approved spec cars is significantly cheaper when they aren't aggressively marketing them.

It's for fuel economy. They even had a 3.727 FD for the first gen in Europe.

Looks like the 2022 faces the same way but the mounts are on the opposite side. The piece that it mounts to is separate. Doesn't seem to be a massive change. Wonder if Toyota is using the older piece on the GR86 and if there's an actual impact.

I actually think rear bars that use just the OEM brackets will still fit. Bars that used a spacer off the back like Mann and Karcepts will likely need some tweaking. Here's what the '22 rear bar mount looks like:
