it funny because literally half the tacoma forums are the same complaint.

most stock vehicle radios suck. it's just inherent to anything not part of the luxury vehicle market.

Well, everything except the headunit. I swapped it out for a 2014 Pioneer BeSpoke unit once those owners starting dumping them on the market. Since I pretty much use it only for audiobooks and nav, it has served me well.

However, that "old school" headunit was perfectly functional for audio.

As far as the HVAC controls, well I like my big Tonka truck knobs. They get the job done. Of course, I also like the ones in later models too. Honestly I can't say I've really cared about HVAC controls until recently when they stopped being real buttons or knobs and turned into iPad controls on newer cars. No thanks.
i saw these coming. it's part of why my first rule with vehicles is that i can remove the radio and still drive the car for a month. sounds stupid on the surface though...

i think the hard part of is it that no matter one's income, money is always part of the equation.

if money was no problem, i'd buy an island to be left alone, and then i wouldn't need a car at all!

Because when someone says something like that, they typically don't LITERALLY mean "money is no object." Because in that case the 2nd gen car is better in every way. The only subjective part to is it looks.

In this case the OP has already considered the money aspect so he was looking for other reasons.
Like I said maybe he could have phrased things a bit differently to make that clear but forcing it to be the main consideration wasn't his intent.
The second gen is "better" in every way but those improvements are not as massive as some would have you think. It is more of a case of the same but improved. As has been said before though the comparisons are almost always against the early FRS and totally ignore many of the improvements and upgrades that occurred through the life of the first gen and the introduction of the two trim levels in the facelift cars.
There are many that also say there were things such as the steering and facelift final drive that were preferable in the first gen. These of course are also subjective based on driving style and personal preference though.

The only objection that I have raised is this oft repeated statement that people that still enjoy their gen one cars are only saying so because they can't afford a new one. THIS is why price keeps getting thrown back in the mix.

I will disagree on one thing... the steering is better in the 1st gen car.

It's not a drastic difference (not like the hydralic steering on my old BMW vs BMW electric steering) and frankly can be called subjective. But this was a small step backwards from my limited experience driving a 2nd gen model as well as from multiple people with experience with both cars.

Owned a modified 1st gen for 36k miles, I can't really tell other than it seems a touch lighter, but I still don't have a problem feeling what the car is doing and that's all that matters to me.

I don't need it to be super heavy like my track rat NA that we deleted the power steering on.

The people who are saying that think buying a 2nd gen and putting on BC coilovers and rep wheels is some kind of flex. IE, fritattas.

Now that a Prius is faster than a 1st gen, there's really no reason to stick with it

Unless you're a masochist and enjoy the pain seeing your beloved sports car get out-run by the most pedestrian of offerings

There are things that can be done to make a gen 1 much faster than a Prius.

Well I have a 2020 so it is "rated" at a 6.4 0 to 60 so I can still out run the new Prius!

Not sure about the new Prius rating anyway. Is there a RWD version I am not aware of?

"Toyota says the new powertrain is the reason the Prius Prime can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 6.6 seconds. The AWD Prius can do that sprint in 7 seconds, and the FWD model can do it in 7.2 seconds."

Here's the reason,or at least mine. My car is fully paid off and I'm completely debt free right now,and see no need to get back into debt, just because I can't go faster on public roads than a new Prius.
