Actually, it is probably a classic measurement from a time when sports cars aka coupes were smaller like a Cobra or Miata in size. A Cayman has 48 cubic feet interior space, but it also is about the size of the 86 and wide compared to cars in the past. I wonder what a Lotus is or the cramped space in the Ford GT.

They probably need to mildly revise that definition based on the size of similar yet current cars like the Lotus, Miata, etc., but I am comfortable with something that defines a coupe based on a small compartment.
Once upon a time a "sports car" was defined very clearly as a small, light, two seat, usually convertible vehicle. A coupe could be a sports car but not all sports cars were coupes.
The lines have really blurred since the 70s when the GT classification really came about though.
Some of the old very common terms have all but disappeared now.
Two door (or "Tudor" as Ford tried to make popular) or four door sedan with framed windows vs hardtop without frames was once used for most cars but you rarely see it in marketing materials these days. You would never have dreamt of calling a hardtop a sedan even though it totally was.

Regardless, I don’t know how relinking the definition I already posted would make sense. Maybe you just missed that.
I missed highlighting the sections I meant to. I screwed up!

The 2022 models get rid of them, mostly.

Even the Type-R doesn't look TOO crazy anymore.

Great, now it looks less sporty and more boring.

You know....how about combining the two trends right now...giant grilles and fake vents.

A whole car can be a grille and its slats will be fake vents!

Im a genius!

We'll call it the BMW M9 series Gran coupe turismo competition
Toyota's will be the GR Celica Supra Mark V
and Honda's version will be the Civic Mugen type RS A spec Sport

Cars have all increased so much in size, it makes little sense to rely on outdated interior space measurements to differentiate coupes vs sedans etc. I rely on the common understanding that a coupe is a two door car with two seats or possibly 2+2, a sedan is a four door car with two full rows of seating. Much easier to understand the intent and style of a car that way than interior volume.

Not sure why a FWD CTR would be compared to a RWD coupe like the Supra. A FWD hatchback is a fundamentally different vehicle, meeting different needs, to a RWD sportscar. It’s not about speed or track times... lots of huge, heavy sedans and hatchbacks, heck, even full size SUVs, now get around a track more quickly than many working class RWD sportscars.

The driving experiences are completely different though. You can’t compare the experience of sitting low to the ground in a dedicated two door RWD sportscar to sitting up high in a conventional four or five door FWD or AWD hatch or SUV that has had a powerful turbo engine, trick suspension, sticky tires and massive brakes slapped on it. Those go fast mods can punt even an ugly everyday car around a track really quickly. But it won’t provide the driving experience of a well set up RWD sportscar.

You kinda have to remember, the entrance fee is much higher for a CTR than it is a twin. Also, the typical owner of a CTR is a braindead shmuck who thinks an intercooler is going to fix their overheating problems, and will never go to the track.

In my area guys shopping at that price point tend to go Camaro, Mustang, or used Cayman. I don't think it is really a knock on the CTR.

Location and the community there definitely plays a part. There is about 4 or 5 CTRs in my small area.. all old man driven besides my own though. Then about 99999 twins and a shitload of German pop bang crackle boom ping pang pong exhausty Bois.

I have seen 3 other Twins since March. Three, 3, III, Trois.
We have a few of the German pop crowd but mostly it is older Civics and Neons making all the noise around my neighbourhood. No doubt if I drove to the north end of the city where the University and colleges all are the demographic would change dramatically. Don't think they will let you into that area with a car that costs less than $80,000.
