CVT??

Again another rumor I found, and ok it states some ridiculous shit like hybrid 86 and whatever, I don't care about that, I heard those before and I don't beleive them, but this is the 1st I heard of a cvt gearbox.

This is actually the second time I've heard CVT. I think the first mention was from...insideline.com???

But then I also remember someone saying that their insider source said specifically no DSG or CVT but a normal auto with paddle shifters.

Don't like the CVT idea.

I really like how the CVT gearbox feels in the newer Outback models. The ride and power distribution is smoother. Honestly it was the CVT gear box that sold me on the car, and i had to purchase one for my dad.

But CVT in a RWD sports chassis mated to a hybrid motor, hmmm..im not sure how i feel about it. If we look at the CR-Z market, its there, but not as demanding as anticipated. Id assume that the same would follow for a hybrid 86. Probably not the best idea on the table.

I'd preffer it to be a manual. Actually I would only buy it if it's a manual

I can see them offering this just to increase the range they can market towards tho

The CR-Z has a great market it just didn't live up to the hype and doesn't fulfill the wants of the market. seriously that car was the biggest let down yet considering it was the most exciting thing to come from Honda in a loooong time and it was veryy blah by the time it made it to production

I'm sure the 86 will come in a manual for sure, but I wouldn't be surprised if the automatic was a CVT. They are very fuel efficient and quite smooth, but in a RWD coupe? Hopefully this holds out for the sedan version, then it would make some sense.

Apart from the drivetrain losses and lower torque-handling capabilities they also make cars faster... it's basically like having a variable gear, which means you can keep the engine at the max power point in the rev range! They just need to refine the idea more to handle more torque and not have as much drivetrain power loss and CVT transmissions will be in almost every car

I personally think it would go against what the FT86 is suppose to stand for, like the car it takes its inspiration from the ae86 the car is all about driving exp and rewarding the driver with a balance and light rwd car

CVT would add weight as well as take control away from the driver and let a computer decide on whats best which ruins the spirit of a lightweight drivers car

If they can figure out a way to make CVTs have less frictional loss, more durability, and more torque handling capability for the weight, they'll be perfect for most cars, but for a fun car, they probably won't work since automatic is no good. lol imagine a manually controlled ratio CVT...that would be a nightmare to try and drive, although it would be fun before you crashed or stalled.

Mr.Jay, I completely agree there... In the same way that I think all sports cars should be offered with an option of a manual. But the reality is that most buyers WILL choose the Auto (just look at the stats...), and I would prefer a well-designed CVT over a traditional Auto.

However, I would still take a paddle-shifted auto (Dual-clutch, SMG, etc.) over a CVT. Whichever gives more control really, but because both a CVT and a traditional Auto give relatively poor control, I would have to take the one that provides the best benefits (CVT).

If the auto option is a CVT, who cares? Most of us will be going manual anyways.
