Pricing vs WRX?
Out of curiosity, I was wondering why is the BRZ priced just like a WRX, when the WRX pretty much has everything more than the brz tech-and-spec wise. AWD system, more refined cabin/features, turbo fa20, in-house developed CVT, bigger and more material in the body, etc.
Now I understand the usual answer is "the RND needed to develop the frs/brz from scratch" - but is there really Conclusive data to support this? . Is it plain market factors/economy of scale? Or a definite combo of both? Been trying to read around and im not sure if there's conclusive info on it. Just some late night hard-to-sleep thoughts..... Pricing is not only related to costs, including economies of scale, but what the market will bear. The latter is related to number/kind of competitors and emotional factors. The BRZ is a sports car and the WRX is a sedan. Pricing is also related to corporate goals. When you are trying to push sales of a car, lower price is one of the tools. If you are trying to limit production for any number of reasons, you raise the price. My guess is that the BRZ is close to the end of its run and they will milk as much profit from it as possible before it goes.

Yes i understand, so does that mean they had to "jack up" the price of the brz to wrx level? or it empirically just as expensive to create that brz? - like the cost of chassis design and suspension was so expensive as to match the cost of producing the WRXs more complex features?

BRZ is an entirely separate chassis with a bunch of parts exclusive to itself. All of the other Subaru’s across the board share a lot of parts, like the dash, instrument cluster, suspension parts, etc. The BRZ actually also shared the same rear subframe along with the Impreza IIRC.
Sharing parts helps reduce the cost. Also, it should be kept in mind that the brz is a joint project with Toyota. If that wasn’t the case and Subaru developed the vehicle entirely without their help, then I imagine the vehicle would be quite a bit more expensive.

We don't have the WRX in Europe, but still the price is quite high. A forester turbo diesel is cheaper than the BRZ and with a better trim level. If you start the modifications, then the BRZ can easily reach even the price of a base WRX STI.

Edit: Numbers are actually kinda weird.. it shows 27k for brz, 29k for wrx on Subaru Canada, then Subaru ontario shows 30k brz, 32k wrx :/. So 2k difference, not 4-5k. Interest for Financing is quite different though, but this is relative to area you live in.

See my edit above. I see no reason for the BRZ to be more though.. you aren't getting literally more car. That's a little nutty.

Get a used FRS way cheaper. Supply and demand really. I own and love both.
Paid 24k for my 04 WRX in 2003, paid 28k for my 16 BRZ limited AT 13 years later. Not really that bad if you think about it. |

You either buy a BRZ because you didn't want a Miata, or you bought it because you're daft and think it's something it's not... given the number of people whining about how it should have been this or that, this latter group is quite large.

I bought an 86 because I wanted a sporty fun good looking car, not because I didn't want a Miata or because I thought it was something that it wasn't. I also don't think anyone was whining here, so I'd reserve that comment for another thread lol.

Ooh, right. You can get one with a garage in the back to park your BRZ... Only whining I noted was about the price, and how somehow it should be higher on the WRX. Or was that lower on the BRZ... but yeah.

I feel like I got a lot more value out of my car than what Subaru offers in the WRX. Different priorities lead to different values.
