also the primary argument on why car dealerships still exist-- to help people decide. for car people like you or i, we do everything before. we've picked every option we do or don't want, checked average sale prices, located available inventory and alternatives within our acceptable distance, even located financing and are aware of the average rates if we needed it. all before ever setting foot at a dealer. but most people don't do that. the majority of the planet: car done broke. i go to da dealership for new car.

I agree with you in most every other automotive instance, but the twins have always been niche. I find it tough to believe someone would just drop their $25+k on the AT if they walked in intending to buy the MT. I'm sure it's happened, but still.

While I am just as incredulous as you, this forum is littered with testimonials of buyer's remorse because they were looking for a one type but settled for the other. It happens all the time.

Yep, i have a niece in Florida that has owned an FRS she bought used and a second 86 she later bought new with the FRS as a trade-in. She drives them because, and I quote her "It's small and cute with nice curves, like me". One was an AT and one was an MT.

We had a tech from our robot supplier in that drove a BRZ. Caught up with him just before he left and said "Nice BRZ that is my FRS over there" His reply was "what is an FRS?" He had owned the BRZ for 3 years and had no clue there was a Scion/Toyota version. He thought it was only a Subaru thing. I have spoke to about 8 local owners. Of those 8 only 3 were active in any form of "enthusiast" activities. All the rest just drove it like it was a normal car (which it is of course) and had no idea there was any type of community attached to it.

Yeah, finally picked her up last night. Needs her TRD parts (didn't come with them, so I ordered separately) but very, very nice.

I bought a brand new automatic 2020 86 GT a month ago and I adore it. As someone who has to deal with frequent city traffic, I greatly appreciate having the convenience of an automatic transmission while at the same time still being able to have fun on the twisty backroads on the weekends with the paddle shifters.
There's no reason for anyone to feel ashamed for buying an automatic, it's really just up to your personal preference and your driving needs. At the end of the day, we're all 86 lovers here. |

Lol... when I was in my teens and twenties, I had a fox mustang I used to swap back and forth between auto and manual transmissions, sometimes swapping transmissions 2-3 times per year. I liked both, but could only afford one car so when I felt like driving stick or auto I just put that transmission in until I felt like driving the other. I had the swap process down to where I could swap over in about 4 hours. Sometimes I'd blow them up behind too much boost so I could swap one while I rebuilt the other. Anyhow, I am rambling like an old man reliving his youth. Thankfully, on in my years, I am blessed to be able to afford both a manual and an auto car so I don't have to repeat the craziness of my youth. Both cars are equally fun to drive (and black ) and often difficult to decide which car to take out. My wife hates both so at least that doesn't complicate the decision further. One thing is for sure, I've never regretted buying the auto in the 86 or considered swapping it. It's fun the way it is.
