Cities are hurting big time. They are going to have to convert all those old office buildings to apartments or something because anyone who can work remotely isn't going to start commuting again.

I can assure you, people are going to be going back into work. It is REALLY hard to form effective new teams without some personal interaction.

And by hard, I mean you have to get lucky that the people you put into the team are all on the same page from the getgo.

You're so right, I started my new job last year, my first day was the first day of lockdown! My first day was my last day in the office, picked up my laptop, phone and got an induction. Since then working from home, trying to learn new systems and tried really hard to get to know people. I noted that people are not very keen to engage in small talk over Teams!! Just focused on getting something fucking done and then move on... I just got tired of it all.

Decided to move, a new job that requires going out and about, managing a team who are site based so that will be nice, get back to meeting people and driving.. instead of sitting at my desk doing Teams calls all day long..

Yeah, not sure I'll feel relief. Maybe? So many things have gone all wonky for me, and the vaccine is just one very small part of getting through that... Except it won't yet. But I know I'm doing my part. Need the job market to stop being stupid and shareholder focused too...
I'm thrilled to have a reason to shun society. There are things I miss, but that's location not covid. I wasn't getting my regen time/place anyway, haven't for a very long time. Being around people drains my energy

I’ve always considered myself mostly an introvert but I hate working from home, despite being a software engineer.

I feel like the whole tech industry the last year is all “wow we should just work from home all the time after the pandemic, I’m so much more productive!”

But I hate the lack of interaction. I feel like I never got to properly meet my new coworkers, and communicating with our voice chat is awful because there’s lag, so sometimes you pause for the person to speak and by the time they start + the lag, you think they have nothing to say, and then you speak over them, etc.

I personally miss growing closer with my team because it helps me build solid collaborative relationships with them. I haven’t had that all year at my new job.

I realize I’m basically an outlier but still.

It sounds like we’ll be doing 2 office days, 3 optional WFH days once things are back to normal but personally I’d prefer the opposite.

Maybe I’m more extroverted than I thought.

Check my most recent post.

But honestly, software engineering work is a whole lot different from being a pilot.

Maybe half of engineers will want to keep only working from home but I doubt the other half will, at least not full time.

I can’t be the only one who feels this way.

Yessss this is basically my experience. We started the full time WFH two weeks after I joined last year.

It’s been awful as a new employee for all the reasons you mentioned and more.

I just found my department colleagues not very friendly, they weren't keen to build a relationship, however, teams outside of my department were great and they are the ones who have expressed the greatest surprise that I'm leaving and have been very nice with their words. I've had the complete opposite from my department colleagues, not a single call or email since they heard I was leaving.. Fucking weirdos..

Eastern Europeans are getting it. I'm suspicious of anything coming out of societies without a free press.

Well, I'm suspicious period.
