forks in shifter issue
My car just broke down again. The car has only 11k on it and this is the 2nd time the forks in the shifter have broken on me. Thankfully the car is still under warranty so it should get fixed but how can I stop this from happening? Happening once is one thing but twice when the car is under 12k miles is strange.

Do you rest your hand on the shifter while driving (when not actually shifting)? If so, stop doing that. Keep your hand off the shifter except when actually shifting.

Whether you have or not, I reckon your problem is pilot error. I suggest you "lighten up" on your shifting technique. Firmly pull or push the shift lever into the next gear up or down. The shifter knows how to go ...... it just needs your input on where to go. humfrz |

To make sure I'm reading you right, I think the word you're looking for is gates, not forks. The shifter should move easily enough through all the gates. So what could be causing your issue?

No, he means shift forks. He says he broke two, which sounds pretty crazy actually.

However they did spawn a whole generation that had a renewed interest in cars. But I agree, watching them ram the shifter in the next gear was ridiculous. Just like the movie title, Fast and Furious.

I see the same behavior in some clips people share to demonstrate issues they are having with their transmissions. They are painful to watch.

To answer all of the questions:
I do not rest my hand on the shifter. There is a short throw shifter installed however I did not install it. The mechanic I talked to at the time said it was the forks that had broken and not the gates. |

Update: The car is "fixed", apparently the shift linkage was messed up but now the whole shifter feels loose and sloppy. Also I am able to rotate the entire shifter about an 8th of a full rotation. The mechanic claims this isn't an issue but I am skeptical.

You should be skeptical; that doesn't sound right. It sounds like a bushing wasn't reinstalled somewhere.
