2JZ

Found a 2jz-ge engine today. Good thing is, found it in my sisters GS-300. And she is willing to trade me the car for $1500. Is it worth it? Has anyone done an 2JZ engine swap?

Unless you find a 2jz-gte bottom end, swap the vvti head from the 2jz-ge onto it, and turbocharge, it is definitely not worth it. But at that point you might as well put the money you would use to buy the car towards a 2jz-gte longblock.

Nop not worth it, you really need to have a deep pocket for the 2j swap.

yeah so you buy the 2jzg(none turbo)e for 1500 how much you got left to turn it into a 2jzgte?

Than how much you got left after that to put it into your 86/BRZ?

Might as well save up more money and get a 2jz from Japan with the stock piles of engines they have. Dont see why people would do an engine swap unless if they blew there motor or if there motor is up there in age which is impossible since this cars still new.

Well, Figured by the time I've Turbo'd the fa20 engine and had it like I wanted it, I would have spent close to $7k having bought, installed, tuned, dyno'd, plus additional parts (oil coolers, oil catch cans, etc) by that time I could have gotten the 2JZ engine and taken my time and built it in my garage and had it ready to drop in completely built.

I'm not in a rush to replace the Fa20 engine, but here is a 2JZ engine sitting in my sisters drive-way that I could take possession of and tweek and have it ready to drop in for more power. The Fa20 engine is weak. Car like the FRS should have came stock with way more rwhp. I would have thought more like 250 rwhp. I love my FRS. But I want more power. And if I'm going to have to turbo and build stock engine to get that, why not just use a engine that I can take my time and build... Thats what I meant when I asked was it worth it. Not to swap out tomorrow...

Why not just spend 4 grand on a Rotrex SC kit and call it a day?

50% more HP and 45% more TQ over stock with excellent reliability, near silent operation and CARB legality should suffice?

So essentially you'd be paying $1500 for a non-VVTI 2JZ-GE? Nah, doesn't sound prudent to me. JDMenginedepot has 2JZ-GTE VVTi with auto trans for $1,700:

http://www.jdmenginedepot.com/jdm_en...ess_JDM_2JZGTE

If you used your sister's Aristo you'd still need a turbo kit ($2000-$4000).

Don't pull the trigger on any big purchases until you've laid out *exactly* what you need for the whole conversion.

I spent $250 to get an Aristo bottom end (from the junkyard on-base, much cheaper than a local-owned one) for my Chaser's 1.5JZ swap. I still expect to spend ~$7k to complete it the way I want (twin scroll ball bearing turbo, dual waste gate manifold, GM LQ9 Coils, Tomei cams, 1000cc injectors, Megasquirt engine management).

I will agree with the op on one thing. The fa20 is a weakling and the frs needs at least another 100hp. You're gonna spend a bunch to fully build the stock 4 banger when you can probably have a 2jzgte for just a a bit more. I've also thought if ever my fa20 kicks the bucket, I'd dump it for an lsx or 2j. Would make for a wild ride!

But my biggest concern would be upsetting the balance of the car so logic tells me to keep the boxer in the car. Just build and turbo the piss outta the FA.

Just as @hmong337 said, I would be more concerned about upsetting the balance. Obviously its fun to think about a 2j in the car because the motor is awesome. But with that motor you're gonna need the beefy trans (preferably the getrag 6 speed). All together the 2jzgte is around 700 lbs (trans included). That's a lot of weight to add. Not to mention all the custom wiring, custom mounts, and other headaches you might have doing a swap that I think only a couple shops have done for show cars (may be more out there). Also keep in mind, going turbo on the 2j with vvti is a fair bit more expensive IIRC.

I do think the car needs more power also, it might be prudent to just spend the money on either building the motor and going with FI (turbo or SC) or waiting for someone to start swapping in STi Motors. What kind of power are you wanting in the car?
