I have owned a 280Z which I considered a sports car. Then, later, I owned a 350Z. That car was more like a Japanese version of the American muscle cars. I sort of felt the same about the two Supra that I owned. I considered all three of those more of a GT car or highway cruiser than a sports car because they all had big HP but were softly sprung and had questionable handling when pushed hard.

With Nissan having recently had all the drama with Ghosn, they have to do something to remake their image and try to salvage the company. If they maintain the status quo they are done for, so perhaps a shiny new halo car with a link to their glory days would help.

I would rather see them build a truly lightweight sports car reminiscent of the 240Z but as someone else pointed out, today's sporty car buyers are all about 0-60, 1/4 mile times, HP numbers and top speed. Ya gotta have the numbers for street cred, bro!

We will just have to wait and see what happens.

Interviewer: ...what about the rest of the powertrain?
Every swapper: So yeah, I'll be using a CD009 for the transmission.

I'll say this. The transmission was a joy to operate in the 350Z.

I really like my Nissan as much as my FR-S. It's quicker and more powerful with a quieter interior and more features, but also heavier and not as good handling on road... offroad an entirely different story with the aftermarket suspension I installed...I like it better than it's equivalent Toyota counterpart, which I use to own as well.

C&D is at least semi-credible still, they posit a realistic vehicle by taking the Infiniti chassis and slapping a MT in it that will likely end up touching $40k as a pony car competitor. It's at least plausible instead of some bullshit about a brand new chassis and I6 motor or detuned GTR V6 making 400 hp and weighing less than 2500 lbs or whatever.

As above this doesn't bode well for a vehicle to be more than the sum of it's parts so, glad they're still trying but meh. And I think they have a good niche as sitting between the Pony cars and the 86/ND in terms of power and weight, they just need to make it exciting somehow.

As for using the R35 as evidence Nissan doesn't suck; that just proves they haven't done anything interesting in over 10 years.

I wouldn't call the 400Z "new" or even a "sports car". 400Z will share a platform with the Infiniti Q60 which has been available since 2017. The Q60 is based on the Q50 which is even older and on top of that the Q50 is based on the G35 from 2001: A Space Odyssey.

In all seriousness, modern Nissan RWD cars are based on the Nissan FM Platform that debuted at the turn of the millennium; but I'm pretty sure it has been modified and updated. That being said, it's still a very old platform and may not fully benefit from the latest developments in weight reduction, crash safety and refinement.

What the Q60/50 (and Infinitis in general) do have going for them is that they have really good lease deals and sales incentives and I'm talking pre-pandemic days. This is likely a result of being able to amortize the R&D cost of a vehicle platform for 20 years.

The final point against the 400Z returning to being a true sports car is the IDX concept from 2013. Nissan ultimately ended the IDX project because the factory that builds the 370Z, Q60/50 could not be modified to build a small RWD platform that the IDX would require.

It is hard to best the GTR. That has been the case for a long time. If interesting is defined by performance then Nissan is no different than many manufactures that have instead focused on emissions (Nissan Leaf), economy (VC-Turbo) and safety assistance technologies.

So your evidence is research in an engine technology that has not yet hit the roads and Infiniti's safety features? You're right, every company is doing shit like that.

However every other major manufacturer has put out a new/significantly updated sporty fun car in the last decade, most within the last 5 years, even Nissan's partner Renault keeps the Megane up to date and came out with the Alpine A110, Nissan hasn't done shit.

Toyota - Zupra 2019, GR4 Yaris
VAG - Porsche - 991, 981, Taycan, MQB GTI/Golf R got updated in 2019, TT, Audi R/S# etc.
Hyundai - Stinger, Veloster N
GM - Camaro got lighter with improved suspension
Ford - Focus RS, Mustang w/ IRS, GT Mk3
Honda - S660, NSX, updated Civic Si/R
FCA - Fiata, Giulia, Viper, Demon/Hellcat, Ferraris I guess idk

Nissan/Infiniti are still producing the same tired shit from last decade when it comes to fun cars. The 370Z replacement looks to be no different, a day late and a dollar short.

No one really cares about sports cars, except the people who do, and they are still buying the 370z. Sports cars aren't hot sellers. I will just be happy if we are lucky enough to see a 400z with a manual transmission.

As I said in another thread, Nissan should just rebadge the A110 as the new Z and bring it to NA.

@irace neat, hope it's reliable and they can put it in something fun, thanks for educating me.

Why do you keep posting here? Wouldn't you be a lot happier in a different echo chamber like electrek?

Because I enjoy educating you.

Why are you so cognizant of my interests? Fanboy maybe? Don't lie.

The A110 is priced at Cayman money, so not really the territory of a Z car. It could make an interesting middle car between a Z and a GTR, though. Plus, it's automatic only.
