Not really sure but suspect that it is because there was no formal military in Japan until the end of the 1800s. When they did form a standing military they based it around Britain.
This is especially true for the navy since they bought most of their ships from the UK and modeled the whole thing around the Royal Navy right down to the last detail. This was probably the start of using Latin lettering and Arabic numerals. Besides they are easier to read from a distance!

Japanese sailors WW2.

British sailors WW2

And inherited the British propensity to think that they need to rule the world...

Western lettering and numbering can be traced back in Japan to the 1500's back when dutch ships were their main trade. I wouldn't be surprised if if the british sgips were when it took hold.

Pretty neat subject though.

I am thinking of adding some clouds to my display. They would be made out of some of my wife's Christmas "snow" polyester batting and would be actually pretty thin so not a big dense wad of cotton or anything.
What do you guys think? Too hoky?

Worth a shot. If it looks bad, you can just pull them off.

That is what I am thinking. The only reason I didn't just go ahead and do it was that getting to the stuff means moving and digging through about 12 big boxes to find it.
Not like I can run down to the store for Christmas decorations in mid April. That is if the stores were even open! I could use cotton balls but even pulled apart they are denser than I want.

People do something similar to drift dioramas, and looks good there. So I would think you can make it work as clouds.

Oh yes!
I was worried that it may look too intense but I see what you mean.
Time to move some boxes I guess.

I'm kinda glad that you're married... Hairspray, wife's Xmas snow, what next?? This is the kinda of thing that gets single men into trouble.. "Yes, Officer! I am building a plastic Airfix model! Really!".

My wife get's so mad at me sometimes!
"Where is your hairspray?"
"Don't throw away those foil tops from the chip dip"
"I want that packaging when you open that"
"Hang on I just want to look at those picture frame"
"Oh that shiny wrapping paper may come in handy save me a piece"
"Are you done with that silver thread?"

Re: fuzzy model clouds
Might work if you put it in a mantel clock globe.
If you leave it out in the open it's more of a dust magnet than anything else.

I remember cringing inside while watching a room design competition show ...
One of the designers hot glued feedlot hay to all the walls.
Definitely cray cray

That was one of my original concerns so I have to design to take into account.
It will be suspended on hidden wires so could be easily swapped out when it got too dusty.
