This. I know I would want to push my BRZ as much as I push my SpecE30 at the track which is why I haven't taken it there.

The picture appeared to be taken after the car was removed from the track. Extensive damage on the passenger side from the front wheel back. The rear bumper was torn off. It looked like all the airbags deployed. No damage to roof or glass so it does not appear that there was a rollover.
Hopefully, the driver and passenger are OK. He is probably too shocked and bummed out to post. I can't blame him. |

Hey fellas, it was me. I crashed my BRZ at South Bend (turn 10). Lost the rear going down the hill and slowly spun counterclockwise around 70 mph, left the track, slid a few hundred feet and then hit the tire wall with the passenger side/rear hard enough to lift the car onto two wheels before it spun around. I felt like an idiot b/c if I had over-corrected and spun the other way there's nothing to hit. I had an instructor onboard at the time, and am happy to say neither of us sustained any injury.
I am happy to say that I DID buy a track event policy with Lockton Affinity for $30k of coverage, so I should be covered just fine. Most of the damage was from the impact with the tire wall, however after the impact my brakes and exhaust set the grass on fire and burned off all the plastic under the front half of the car, and damaged the paint on both front fenders as well. Just a question now of whether or not the car is totaled really. I destroyed the: -rear bumper cover -rear trunk lid -rear unit body trunk area is pushed in -rear quarter panel, C&A pillar piece -passenger door -right side view mirror -fire damage to both front fenders -all plastic panels under the car and lower section of engine bay destroyed by fire -passenger side curtain airbag deployed -minor interior smoke damage Car drives fine and I don't think there's any suspension damage but the alignment is way off and there's a slight vibration. I can't post pics from work but will later. And out of curiosity Brett, where did you get the pic you originally posted from? Oh and you'll be interested/happy to know that I was running a GoPro bumper cam during this session, so the incident is caught on film. In hindsight it was f*cking stupid to run the Michelin Primacy tires for this event.

Good on you and I'm glad nobody was hurt. I could never understand how some folks are willing to risk their car going on a track without any track insurance.

Hey bro, glad to hear you're ok and had coverage! You live you learn right? Good luck on working out the particulars with the claim, but most of all just glad to hear the car did its job and kept you and the instructor safe!

Very happy to hear you are OK, and secondly that you are smart and bought insurance for it. I'm pretty sure it is totaled. Hope you get another 86!

I'm not sure if it is as difficult to find BRZ's now as it could have been earlier but my local dealer appear to have 4 in stock: http://www.kellysubaru.com/all-inven...ions=compliant

Glad nobody was hurt, and glad you bought coverage. Ten percent deductible and they cover the rest, right?

Sorry to hear of your mishap, and glad to hear you and your instructor are uninjured. See this video, especially at 2:45 onward where Randy Pobst talks about Turn 10. Randy obviously thinks the exit of T10 is troublesome. Randy suggests a late apex for this one. One MUST have the turn completed AND THE STEERING STRAIGHT as one heads down the hill exiting T10. It sounds as though you fell prey to the very thing Randy warns of, here. I guess the chassis really unloads at the exit as the road drops out from beneath you, heading downhill, and the car loses grip dramatically, according to Randy. Get the steering STRAIGHT by your trackout point. Otherwise, with any lefthand steering lock dialed in, the car will start rotating counterclockwise. You won't like it. At the very least you will likely have what I call a "squirt-worthy moment"; that would be a squirt in the Depends! [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VRgzmtdtXnk"]Randy Pobst VIR Track Daze - YouTube[/ame] I assume you'll be tackling this again. 1) Late apex 2) Hands straight at trackout point Again, I’m glad you're safe. ************** |

I appreciate that video and you are 100% correct.
As far as tackling it again...I actually did that very day! I was able to get the car cleaned up enough mechanically for tech to give me the "okay" to go back on track, which I did for 3 more laps...and then pulled over b/c my exhaust decided to disconnect between the header and overpipe (though at the time we just knew it was making a LOT of noise so pulled over off track to be careful and not ruin another session for everyone else). And I was careful about that turn! I also got a lot of compliments and thumbs up later from people for being so persistent. @bestwheelbase 10% was an option but I went with 15% (dammit!).

Glad to hear that you and the instructor are unharmed. At least you did not compound your on track mistake with a huge financial one and bought the insurance. Paying 15% of the loss will hurt a lot less than the uninsured alternative. There is a couple valuable lessons there for anyone who wants to do track days in their new car.
