How do you connect Android Auto? Is there a USB connection that comes out from somewhere? Can we connect that to the factory USB port?

The HU has 3 ports and my guess is they aren’t all treaded the same way. One probably handles USB storage while the other handles Android Auto/CarPlay. I never use USB storage so I would just connect the port that handles CarPlay to the OEM port.

It comes with USB ports. It comes with the the adapter that retains the factory USB port. You also have the extra ports. I've tried Android auto using the factory port, but it crashes. I use the other USB port and it works just fine. No adapters needed.

Can you not pick which port goes to the factory plug?

Would like to know as well. It seems having the port, regardless of which one, connect to the factory plug is what causes it to crash (the adapter), from what OP seems to imply, but would like clarification as well.

The USBs come as harnesses that plug to the rear of the head unit. They included one harness specific for our car to retain the factory USB. The other USB harnesses are female USB ports you can place wherever you want. I have it plugged to a USB hub in my glove box.

So this is a job for a soldering iron. No big deal. Thanks for answering all of our questions.

Why would you need to solder?

To take a working USB port and splice it into the OEM port.

Oh, so you can use that port for Android auto? Seems like the factory port can't handle the data.

Maybe the harness Teyes provides only feeds the outer pins (power) and not the inner pins (data). The OEM port for sure has data pins because you can plug in an iPhone and get full automation of your music library over USB (and better sound quality than BT). At least on my 2013 FR-S with touch screen.

One question that I've seen conflicting answers for. Will it Bluetooth tether for data or is it strictly WiFi tethering? If it's WiFi only that will be a massive pain in the ass because on the iPhone you would have to manually go into the Personal Hotspot settings to activate the hotspot every time you get in the car.

No, it feeds data. I've played music files and done updates through the factory plug. That's why it leads me to believe it's the factory plug itself. Android auto loads on there but it shuts down right after it loads. Maybe since my car is a 2013 the USB port may not be as good. Not sure about that, just making a guess.

I have used the factory USB plug on an aftermarket unit for both CarPlay and AA without an issue. The factory USB is not the issue.

Often times it is the cable quality not being able to transfer enough data for AA to run. Your best bet is to ensure you get a high-quality USB3.0 cable to run AA. It's very sensitive to that.
