Its like asking why brake lights dont come on when you're not braking.

Original purpose of DRLs was to enhance safety by providing a visual signal during daytime to others that your car is moving towards them.
This is also why they normally turn off when low beams come on (also because those bright LEDs may be blinding to some).

Things change with time though, not sure what default DRL settings for other cars are.
I personally wish it wasnt this way, just to make it easier to take pictures of my car with the DRL on, but oh well.

Also.. why e-brake at a stop light... still learning MT on hills?

The aesthetic of the car was a reason but it's not that serious for me. Ebrake at stop lights is because my commute to work has stupidly long red lights and I noticed the DRLs turning off from the reflection off the car in front.

I was just seeing if there was a 5-10 min adjustment. If not, whatever.

Sometimes I put my car in neutral at a red light to pretend I have a manual to all the other drivers around me, especially on a hill.

It appears that you can change how it operates using Techstream:



So either get a cable and install Techstream on your computer, or go to the dealer and ask them to go in and change it for you.

Pretty sure that just disables it completely, or enables it with normal logic.

Doesn't do what the OP wants it to do.

there are daytime running light modules you can get if you want them to stay on with the engine. i bought one of these modules when i imported my gt-four from japan and wiring it in is pretty easy once you know which wires to tap off of.

on my VW GTI I was able to switch my drl to my fogs, not sure if that is possible on the BRZ

So you use your ebrake at "ridiculously long stoplights?" New to manuals? Or driving in general? Most people would probably keep their foot on the brake pedal.


In all reality, if you're doing this and not keeping your foot on the brake pedal your brake lights aren't on either. So even if there is a person stopped behind you you're relying on them to keep their foot on the brake to warn another person of stopped traffic. Just not a good idea all around. The morning commute to work is not the time to be a lazy driver IMO.

Hah, this thread got way over-complicated.

@trigun286 - The e-brake switch under the e-brake is what controls this. When the e-brake is up, the switch is depressed. Pressing this switch down (e-brake down position) activates the DRL's, and turns off the parking brake warning light on your dash.

Pop off your e-brake boot cover (use both hands, pull firmly straight up), and locate the e-brake switch. I don't have a picture, but its pretty obvious. Unplug the switch and re-install your cover. The DRL's, and boomerangs if using the Always-On harness, will now be on at all times even with the parking brake engaged. Yes, removing switch harness is the easy "hack" you're looking for.

The only side-effect I've noticed to this is the e-brake warning light will no longer illuminate when your parking brake is up... for obvious reasons. So if you rely on your dash to remind you to put your parking brake down before moving, good luck?

I'd love to do this on the BRZ. I've eliminated the DRL's - the look is too cluttered - and replaced the housing with JDM.

When DRLs are on, there is no indication from the rear of your car that they are on. Makes no difference to the person behind you, they see the same, front DRL lights on or off.

I have no idea why, with DRLs on, there are no running lights on at the rear of a car. It is stupid....There are daytime situations in which cars behind you cannot see your car at all...due to fog or heavy rain...even in bright sunlight.

Personally, I would have the law state that rear running lights should show anytime the DRLs are on.

I'm guessing you want the cool parking lights to always be on instead of the drls? If so that's easy.
