Nice essay brrro!

Oh, you don't want to buy her brah, she'll make you spend more and then ask for money for shoes and expensive drink, all 'cause you really want some boost!

In summary, what car in the price range will really let you have your way, become a better driver for it and keep dreaming of things you'd like to do to it (her) ... It's really great in that sense, keeps the car alive and if you want to increase HP, it's all there ready to do so without forking over lots of money comparatively all at once.

Agree to disagree OP. There should have been a turbo version planned for year 2 or 3 of the model. A car maker cannot sit back and let reviewers and owners complain about ONE thing over and over, yet fail to address it. That's bad for business, too, right?
I enjoy the car as is, no doubt. But I would prefer the option of buying a turbo version that has factory support and warranty.
None of us knows the business case for adding it or not adding it - we are speculating. There's already a turbo version of the engine in the WRX. Maybe it doesn't fit, but this is Toyobaru, they can figure it out if they wanted to.
I am not going to sit around and make excuses for the company. I am just a driver who wants a little more. The package is great overall.

Between the WRX, STI and Impreza, Subaru will sell nearly 100,000 units this year. That alone is case enough to roll some money back into producing the higher-end models. Toyobaru will be lucky if they sell 20k units of the 86.

Business sense is not speculation, especially for those that have seen how these decisions are made. They're not "excuses," they're reasons. Toyobaru, had they created an 86 trim with a turbo, would've had to have filtered those R&D costs into even the NA car to make ground back. That means a higher base price for a car that they'd have sold how many of?

Subie is better off pushing those people into the WRX and Toyota will want them to buy the new collab car. That's just business.

Which is sad, and shows a profound lack of market awareness. It wouldn't be too difficult to lurk forums such as this one, see what mods are popular and almost universally recommended, and incorporate similar advances into a newer model.

That would require a major redesign and rebuild, so I can see why they wouldn't. But for Subaru, put group-n suspension and drivetrain bushings in. They've done this for some of the rarer spec STis since back in the day, so they have the technology and production lines already in place. Then put slightly stiffer springs in that work better with the struts. They make them, they just paint them pink and put an exorbitant price tag on them. Stop that, make it OE. Then put on Bridgestone RE070's or whatever tires come on the STI. Finally, add a little more negative camber from the factory.

That's all I would change. They could put on more aggressive brake pads, add brake ducts, and sell it as a track package.

Not being turbo was a big SELLING point in my book. If were turbo I probably wouldn't have purchased it.

The problem is they do lurk the forums, or at least the marketers do, and marketing idiocy is going to drive the "improvements". Real improvements will cost money, and the FR-S sits in a very small money niche.

The current FR-S is/was an exact opposite of "profound lack of market awareness", so much so that I'm surprised it got built at all. The gearhead's got it past the bean-counters against all odds.

If they decide to go with "popular", then the first-gen FR-S will be the best of the breed.

To be fair, Toyobaru already has you, so they care less about you and more about the potential consumer. They also most assuredly spend a bazillion dollars in market research each year on each project to make sure they're cranking out cars that will sell (wonder where all those upper-appointment, performance un-enhanced trims came from?). Enthusiasts make up such a tiny segment of the overall customer base that it's not really surprising that a juiced version of the car has not come along yet.

I bet there are some seriously heated debates on which colour windshield washer fluid is superior!

Subaru has a history of building low numbers of higher spec models for enthusiasts. The 22b, WRX type RA, STi type R and RA, STi S201 - S204, R205, and more. It wouldn't be a huge leap for them to make a genuine special edition of the BRZ. The Blue edition is worthless. "Oh look, we put in different fabric and added a couple of trim pieces to it." Woo.
