oh i hope so. The world would be a much better place without fuel derived from staple food sources.

There is no shortage of corn as a foodstuff and it is not like it is being shipped everywhere as food anyway so what is wrong with using it as a relatively clean, cheap, renewable fuel source?

Just heard a news article on NPR saying that Nebraska farmers are enjoying a bumper corn crop this year--and will still likely operate at a marginal profit, or more likely, at a loss. My argument against using ethanol is more based on the fact that it is just as polluting and energy consuming to make and consume as petroleum/fossil fuels are, not to mention it doesn't burn as efficiently.

I am not aware of how it is converted so you may have a point there.

There is a shortage. Using a staple foodstuff as a source of fuel has raised the price of everything people buy to eat. There are food riots because of it. Farmers shift land they use for other crops to corn to get ethanol subsidies which raise the price of all other crops.

The most important bit to me though is it reduces gas mileage and makes gasoline cost even more than it already does. And it destroys older collector vehicles as Jay Leno has written about.

A real alternative is using bio fuels that are not derived from food. There are quite a few out there, and people can even modify diesel engines to run on old used frying oil, which is just flat out awesome.

To my knowledge, it will run but I don't think you'll see any noticeable difference without a specific tune for 104 octane.
