In a nutshell, I think that was precisely the message, and what should be the message for a fun car.

The BRZ/86 has some practical elements (reasonable storage space, token back seat for legless midgets or small children, reliability), but it's mostly a car to fulfill wants and not needs (except for those of us who need a sports car for continuation of life). It's not a car most people would consider as their only car or for practical transportation needs (except perhaps the young who live in mild climates and need little more than enclosed transport).

I think it would be pointless for the commercial to talk about boring, practical things, carrying capacity, safety features, or 'numbers' (since this is most definitely not a 'numbers' car). The commercial needs to appeal to people's feelings, their emotions. It has to engage them, the same way a person needs to feel connected with the car to buy it.

Many people like to feel that they're a bit of a 'rebel' (even if they're not). A buyer needs an element of rebelliousness, of bucking practicality, to buy a car like this. In 2 minutes, it does a good job of conveying that feeling. Hell, I'm a 60-something curmudgeon/geezer/geek, and I liked watching it, making me feel a tiny little bit of my perception of my old teenage/20-something self-styled 'non-conformist' self (even though it's a far cry from the reality of me now).

The commercial is certainly quirky (at least by bland American standards), but that's also the point: to get people to watch it. How long would most people stay tuned in if it was a boring guy in a suit walking around the car reciting meaningless statistics? In marketing, if you capture people's attention and get them just to listen to the message, then you've accomplished much of the mission.

I don't disagree but they could have gotten that same point across with the portions where someone is enjoying the car and not the part where the women are portrayed as overbearing whining control freaks.

Completely agree. Not to 'excuse' the commercial, but it's obviously made in and for some non-U.S. market, with different (non-woke) cultural standards to ours.

That may be the first time I've been accused of saying something "woke". MomHawk will be so proud, or wonder what someone did with her husband.

Either way, a very odd marketing take.
A better approach would have been to have some of the spouses initially hostile, then have them sit in the driver's seat, drive the car, and instantly change their minds and love the car. Win-win.

I think they are all just mad their man bought a slow car. I mean who wants to be seen in the passenger seat of a sports car getting the doors blown off by a soccer mom late for soccer practice in her minivan.

Seems extreme to make them suddenly suicidal.

Maybe they just really hate crowds on the sidewalk.

I resemble that remark! I own both a BRZ and a Mustang, and I don't think my wife is about to leave me.

Or is she...?

They balance each other out. Just don’t sell the mustang unless you want to be a bachelor again lol.

LOL! But yikes! I never thought of that!!

(She did encourage me to buy both cars; the Mustang as an early retirement present for myself and to commemorate my first car being a Mustang; though she pushed harder for me to buy the BRZ).

That's actually a smart move on her part,

The mustang keeps you desirable to her
and the BRZ fends off other women.
Win Win

what year mustang?
