Well it is good to question these kinds of things... But in this case the source definitely checks out.

I plan on taking mine out and putting some tyre in a can in the car..

but i still want the spare at home for long trips or just in case.

The other nice thing about having a full size alloy spare was, if your keeping the stock rims and you damage one on some nasty curb, you could of switched it over with the spare. It was like having one get of jail card free :-)
