Yamaha FZ-07/MT-07 is what I would go for in your shoes. Plenty of grunt, tons of fun, and sound fantastic with an aftermarket exhaust

I hope to get a scooter though. A PCX150 or SMAX... Can't find of others in that class that can match those 2.
Its going to be super weird and scary to on the road still. I will surely take safety courses. Thought about a honda metropolitan but the scraping on turns and also a bit limited in what it can do. Though it is light...below 200lbs.
Nice hearing about the scooters stuff above. The impression I get, for person who hasn't owned a scooter, is that they are so much fun.

I understand the logic that power provides a 2nd way out besides the brakes, but too many riders lean on the mentality that power will save them, yet the reality is that adding speed to a potentially dangerous situation is rarely the preferred choice, and yet, it becomes the preferred choice of riders all too often.

I just got back from Thailand, and there are bikes everywhere. There are some crotch rockets and cruisers, but most are scooters and bikes <300cc. I saw some close calls, but I didn’t see one accident in two weeks. Most cars have manuals and most people are on bikes with low power, which means everyone is paying attention and everyone is pretty defensive in their driving, quick to break when necessary. They also change lanes constantly, pass people constantly with oncoming traffic, and speed limits don’t really exist in a lot of areas, but traffic moves more organically than here, and people stay fairly reasonable with their speed and passing, and they are quick to yield to someone wanting to pass. They honk a lot to signal passing besides just using their signals. It is inspiring considering all the motorcycles, scooters and tuk tuks on the road.

Another interesting tidbit from Thailand. So I see this bike I think looks great and it would be perfect as a first bike for the wife: Honda CB150R ExMotion. It reminds me of my Ducati Monster. I look online figuring Honda USA doesn’t sell it and of course they don’t. I have my wife message them on Facebook saying to bring it to the states...a Grom alternative for the popular cafe racer crowd. They replied with a nice denial message, but the cool thing is the next day I see a 2019 Honda CB300R cafe bike on the USA site saying coming soon. I could have missed it when looking before, or it could have been the biggest coincidence, or maybe they were inspired to drop the announcement early after that FB message—I dunno. The 300 in Thailand/Euro doesn’t have the same look as the 150, which is a bummer, but is decent.

Some pics, and yes the bike is slow, has a top speed maybe around 95mph, but the bike will be peppier than most cars and at like 200+lbs would be so light and streamlined:









Compared to the CB300R the 150 above has much better lines from a more cafe and aggressive tank to the tail:

95 may be a high estimate, especially with a rider attached. I can barely squeeze 95 out of my Ninja250r at WOT and a full tuck. The photo's look nice though. I imagine it would be fine if you lived in a city and never used the highway.

I see Groms everywhere where I live. My guess is people take them on joy rides or cannon carving in the countryside. The manufacturer claims 134kph and this video says 140 indicated, so 84-87mph; that’s enough overhead to do the speed limit. Definitely wouldn’t be good for a commuter or in a windy, open-highway city like Sacramento.

I think if you grow up riding bikes/scooters and drive a stick shitf you're automatically 100x safer of a driver than someone who's only ever driven an automatic car.

I have a Honda CB300F, and think this new 300R looks a lot better. The 300 is not a quick bike by any means, but it is faster than my FR-S and most cars, and is excellent for commuting through town. It's also been very reliable, costs only $24/year to insure, averages over 60 mpg, and the maintenance is easy. Great city bike. I would expect this new 300R to do well.

Im thinking the frame might be modular to mulyiple displacement bikes so maybe the 150r bodywork could cross over to the 300 if I was that interested. A 300 would be perfect for the wife.
