Anyone going electric?

I work for a flashlight company, so batteries are very important to me. Battery technology is not silicon based like microchip technology. Example: Your phone is twice as fast as the one you had a few months ago, but the battery is the same.

Battery density has not changed significantly in the past 30 years. Yes Lithium-Ion batteries are great, but with a max range of about half a day of driving (300 miles), they are not the answer most people are looking for.

We, I am predicting it now LOL, should see a change in battery density our lifetime. With the advent of graphene and carbon nano tubes the possibly surface area has now more than doubled. I expect to be an old man, but when it happens, it is going to change the world. Imagine a battery that lasts 10 times as long! Scientist are working on this exact thing now!

STARKVILLE, Miss.—Mississippi State University is showcasing its “Car of the Future” this week in Detroit, Michigan, during an event designed to bring together the best talent in the automotive industry.

MSU researchers from the university’s Center for Advanced Vehicular Systems are attending the Society of Automotive Engineers World Congress April 12-14, when they will reveal the university’s “Car of the Future” after more than two years of work. The project has been under development by a team of MSU faculty, students and alumni working to build a lighter, greener hybrid vehicle that offers over 100 miles of driving using the equivalent of a single gallon of gas – an achievement no other car on the market can offer at the same level of superior efficiency, sporty handling and outstanding performance. The project was funded through a generous gift from MSU alumnus James Worth Bagley to the MSU Foundation.

MSU President Mark E. Keenum said he is eager for the university to share its new state-of-the-art technological advancements and promote the university’s industrial research and development capabilities.

The university’s “Car of the Future” features:

—Control algorithms that recognize driving patterns and can predict future driving patterns.

—Custom designed cast magnesium sub-frame that reduces mass by 40 percent compared to the stock sub-frame while supporting a dual-motor electric drive axle.

—Rear wheel torque vectoring for traction control and enhanced stability to hug tight curves.

—Lightweight battery pack incorporating improved cell cooling through the use of proprietary cooling technologies.

“Mississippi State is anticipating and adapting to the needs of an accelerating automotive industry. Our engineering design teams are trained to recognize the industry’s directional changes and innovate advanced systems, from predictive engine management to regenerative braking systems and more,” Keenum said.

Project leader Matthew Doude, business development officer for CAVS, said the university brings to each of its projects the same attention to detail, innovative approaches and technical expertise to attain success.

“The Center for Advanced Vehicular Systems represents the junction between industry and academia. CAVS is where university expertise is applied to solving industrial research and development challenges, on time and under budget,” he said.

He said MSU’s “Car of the Future” demonstrates the broad range of university design and prototyping capabilities. The group also is working to expand educational opportunities for students and generate more research and development projects for their center.

Zach Rowland, deputy director of CAVS, said CAVS is an interdisciplinary center comprised of research, engineering design and development, and technology transfer teams for industry and government partners.

Uhhhhhhh, energy density in lithium batteries is WAAAAYYYYY higher than in older batteries (ni-cad or ni-mh).

I grew up racing RC trucks and flying planes, and lithium batteries totally changed everything. My stadium truck used to get 4.25 minutes of runtime (geared on purpose, 4 minute race plus enough reserve to finish the current lap). With a lithium polymer pack it's MUCH faster, and gets close to 10 times the run time.

A 2s (8.4v max) 5000mah pack is lighter than an old 6 cell 1700mah ni-cad or 3000mah ni-mh, and can deliver way more current on demand as well. The packs I current run in my truck can deliver about 250a if there's enough load on the motor.

Would still be a huge undertaking, but less so than full electric. Definitely unique still.

Honda basically did this with the new NSX and sorry to say, it is widely despised for many reasons. This MotorTrend review goes into detail.

I was on a team that built race cars here. We have a saying...

"Once it belongs to the school, it never leaves." Trying to buy anything from the school probably would result in about 200 pages of paper work to get a "no."
