I took basic and digital electronics as half-year electives in HS. We didn't have a "Metal Shop", but we did have a pretty good selection of mechanical drawing and fabrication classes in place of art.

For serious trade stuff there was a county trade school folks could take as an alternative to traditional highschool.

NY State lets students start BOCES trade school in the junior or senior year, I think.

We had wood, metal, and auto. As long as you were doing something you passed. We converted two riding lawn mowers into go karts. One guy lost a tooth and another smashed the bumper in on a truck.

Yes, that's exactly what I was talking about. Was just explaining it in generic terms.

Thought about that but they are all fine. Also part of the tinkering the first time was sitting in the dark looking for light shines

I had metal and wood shop in JR high. We had auto, wood, and metal in HS, but I didn't have room to take them, or art being college prep for accounting. Sure, I'm retired now at a young age, but being an accountant sucked the life out of me for 30 years. If I had it to do over, I would do a trade.

I got the scene:

Momhawk - Dadhawk, what are you doing out there in the dark?

Dadhawk - looking for light shines.

Momhawk - mumbles to herself, as she goes back into the house - crazy old fool.

I remember how, because the parent organization was also for the special ed kids, there was a stigma attached to being a 'boces kid.' It was our flavor of the short bus. :/

Until I looked it up tonight, the last time I remember using that term was when I was a kid.

God, we could be so mean to each other I shudder thinking of it now.
