If you fall within the Vin/Date range they are going to rip your engine apart. We do not have details on the actual issue yet because they state they have not completed the required reports to the regulatory agencies. Without that detail it is hard to tell how urgent it is. Suffice it to say they are concerned enough that they dropped their profit forecast for next year by $400,000,000 to account for it.

"Last week, Subaru cut its operating profit expectations for the first six months of the Japanese financial year, which ends in March. The company now expects operating profit of 61 billion yen ($541 million) for the April to September period, a reduction of 49 billion yen from its prior projection. The Subaru spokesman said the majority of the reduction is due to this recall"

Lmao. Got me on that one. I would be hesitant about letting them tear into my motor again. Debacle the first time

If they do have to rip them apart, they better give some kind of extended warranty given that almost all of those affected will be out of warranty already. It worries me to have a random dealership mechanic doing major work like that. They should really just give us all new small blocks.

Same here. My engine blew on the way home last time I'm hoping they give us all new small blocks or at least an extended warranty for a few years.

More of the same except they mention that Toyota will begin mailing recall notices in December and Subaru apparently picking up the tab for all the repairs.

My son's FR-S will be affected and he only has 26,000 miles on it.

I like how they say the part failure can cause "stalling". If a valve spring breaks, it can cause a lot more issues than a stall. It can cause permanent engine damage. I wonder now if some of those rocker arm failures and blown engines may be related to this issue.

They are not going to give whole blocks. They will replace the springs and that is it. They may warranty the springs for a bit but not extend the whole warranty. The handful of FRS/BRZ involved appears to be a drop in the bucket of the whole thing so if they started replacing engines it would break them. Replacing valve springs is pretty basic and any half decent tech should be able to do it just fine.

Replacing valve springs on a normal engine is pretty easy. I am not so sure that is the case on a boxer engine. There is not a lot of room between the wheel wells and the valve covers. The article mentions that it is a 12 hour job per car. I can pull and replace an engine in 12 hours.

I am not saying that anyone is getting a new engine or even new heads.

Ya I suppose getting to the valve springs is harder than actually changing them for these cars.
My old Corvair (I know different but still a boxer) used to eat valve springs like candy. I got so I could change the damn things in my sleep. Had miles of room to work in comparison to these though.

I don't know how comfortable I am with the dealer tearing my out of warranty engine apart on a car that's well over 100k and not worth what I'd like it to be. If they'll offer a reasonable warranty on the engine work I'd feel a lot better about it that's for sure.
