It's probably hard to find a specification for the Toyota/Subaru filters, but looking at the WIX application catalog, they spec a 30 PSI relief pressure for a WL10078.

The FA24 probably has oil pressure relatively close to the FA20, so let's say slightly <10 PSI at idle slightly >70 PSI at 6000 RPM, unless the filter media is clogged, you're not going to push open a 30 PSI bypass with less than 30 PSI of pressure ...

Also, the silicone that gets stuck in the pickup doesn’t only come from the oil pan. It can come from the front timing cover mating surface as well. It can continue to break off from there and plug up the pickup.

I probably didn't...I re-applied the RTV per the service manual, and presented that page of the manual in the video. Yes, I added a little RTV around the bolt holes, not in them (a practice I've done for 20+ years, but admitedly probably should have left out here). If you actually saw what I took off compared to the new application, there is absolutely not more silicone than what was originally there. I removed ropes of RTV and the bolts were also covered in it.

You are right in that the pan is only one potential issue. I'm guessing RTV scraps are more likely coming from those other places you mentioned.

My video states (multiple times) to contact your dealer if you are concerned about this potential issue, and that a DIY could have negative warranty implications. I am aware of that risk and did it myself because I want to bring the info to the community. Plus, those with older cars and no warranty, now know how to clean their oil pickup if they choose to DIY.

I don't think it's that simple. I believe that the bypass works off of a pressure delta, not straight pressure.

To be fair to Justin, that spot you are trying to apply the FIPG is less then 1/2 wide and the bead is called out to be 5/16-1/4 diameter. Doing it on your back under the car has to suck.

I also recommend dropping the tube of FIPG into a bucket of warm water for 15min or so to soften it. It’s really hard to squeeze out. Also using a caulking gun that has the bars down the sides of the tube helps, using one like in the video tends to push the tube sideways so you end up working against yourself even more.

There have been repeated issues with the new chain subaru engines leaking (even lawsuits about it in the Outback)- it would be interesting if Subaru responded to that by just designing the oiling system to tolerate partial stripping and blockage and then increased rtv application everywhere to get closer to 100% no-leak and the failures we’re seeing are due to typical factors and not blocked passages/low pressure

I actually thought about this as well. You will think they have learned from their previous experience with excess RTV cause starvation.

Sounds like a terrible idea. Small pieces could still get through the pickup and clog oil passages.

Here's an idea:

Why not a paper-type gasket coated with pre-cured high-temp RTV a few thousandths of an inch thick?

It would be the perfect amount of sealant needed, and would seal the two halves with no chance of squeeze out. These gaskets could be used on every mating surface to replace the existing sealant.

That would fix this issue permanently.
