obviously. I sent the first sample in to establish a baseline. I expect to see much less metal no matter what I did. The real comparisons will be between sample's 2 and 3 and so on. The test shows more than just metal in the oil. I'm curious how much Moly will remain by comparison to the FF as well as other characteristics of the oil. I'll be more interested in the presence of metal after sample 3 or higher as it should go down drastically.

The FF has higher levels of moly from the FF oil itself, combined with moly from the assembly lube. The Subaru/Idemitsu oil is API SM/ILSAC GF4 and still has high moly.

Any oil that is GF5 (including when the Idemitsu switches to GF5) will have lower levels of moly in order to meet stricter GF5 requirements for sulphated ash.

Word. I'm not always the most clear in posts, despite my best efforts. The 300V contains a crazy amount of moly and there is usually a lot left in the oil after the change. That is what most of the reports on the oil have said for 5w30. I expect it to be pretty similar with the 0w20.

On my next sample I send in, I'll have them check for the longevity of the oil to see what kind of life I can get out of the oil. I'll be sure to check back on this thread in a few months or so. hahaha.

Oil was changed saturday, 6500 miles on it. Sending it out to Blackstone today for a full analysis.
The oil actually looked used this time but not burnt like it looks coming out of a turbo subaru.

I got the results back from my analysis. Pretty quick turn around time (7 days from when I mailed the sample in).

Small request from you folks using Blackstone.. Would you mind asking them what their thoughts are on running 5w30 or even 10w30 on our engines?

I'm not quite liking this water thin oil we're using and willing to sacrifice some mpg for better protection.

Not neccessarily better protection just because it's a heavier weight. Once mine comes back we'll see how the 0w20 subie oil holds up.

I am thinking that we should let blackstone know that the Scion FRS 2.0l and the Subaru brz 2.0l are the same engine. That way they'll have a larger database to compare against.

Yep. I agree (on both points).

The engine was designed to run with 0w20 oil. Unless it is a track-only car and you have a specific need to put a thicker weight in due to excessive heat, I would not deviate from the recommended oil.

When I submitted my sample I think I put both Toyota and Subaru as the makers of the engine, but now I can't remember for sure. There's not a lot of room to write stuff there though. I might include a small note with the next sample. I suppose not everybody has been following the development of this car for a year or more before it was released. haha.

In addition to the moly, this shows the factory fill zinc is higher than a typical 0W-20. The phosphorus is also slightly above typical GF5 levels. I would keep this stuff in for at least 3,750 miles since it's more robust than most 0W-20's unless someone is switching to Red Line or Motul 300V.

We did this for one of our race motors (2.6L 4G64 engine), and it was interesting to see the differences from one oil to another.

It seems in both UOA's that the oil probably sheared quite a bit. I don't know what the 100c cst is on the virgin oil, but I would assume >8.0.

Interested to see future UOA's on these vehicles to see if the shearing continues with other oils.

Other than the high copper, the UOA looks pretty good for a new engine. Anyone have any thoughs on where the copper is coming from? In turbo Subaru's its assumed from the oil cooler, but these cars dont have one.
