Dull Throttle Response?

Reading in another thread, I see one owner notes poor throttle response. He also owns a 991.2 GT3 so perhaps he's jaded. But these being NA, and from personal experience of my 2014 FRS, the throttle response should be more than adequate.

Can any current owners chime in? Much appreciated.

Honestly when I saw that post (different site), I immediately went in to check his post history because I thought he might just be trolling people I'm not sure how many cars are going to compare to a GT3, but I have no complaints with throttle response or body roll. Is the car track tuned off the dealer lot? Definitely not - it's a street car, but it's still incredibly tight and has all sorts of potential for a track car if that's what you want.

takes at least a full tank or so for throttle map to be fully OK. happens also when you disconnect battery or reset ecu tune.

Jeff Perrin told me a trick to help with this, as he sent me many tunes and of course the ecu was reset each time.

"Turn the key on, give it full throttle then lift about 20 times. Turn it off then do this again (20 full throttles, then turn it off). Now start your car."

This completely eliminated the dead pedal after a fresh tune for me, hope it still works as well with the new car.

I just want to add that throttle response seems to be quite rpm-dependent. At 5-6K rpm there is a real sense of urgency, but at anything below the torque dip there isn't much to be impressed by

Haven't revved mind past 4k yet but I agree, it's rather dull.

To be fair I'm also kind of jaded because I have a tuned Miata with an 8lb flywheel so not exactly a fair comparison.

it's definitely not the same as a cable-actuated throttle body, but the 1st gen was one of the most responsive.

my trucks by-wire system is lethargic in comparison, and my gmc work van outright has a mind of it's own-- it actually lets off the throttle plate for the 1-2 shift, it's like driving an r/c car blindfolded...

It's surprising that the throttle response for the 2022 would be any different than previous years... Some people are speculating the GR86 will have better throttle response than the BRZ, but I doubt this as well.

I'm going to have to drive them to believe the throttle response is really that bad. People here and in the other thread are using words like "dull", "pretty bad", "dismal", "ridiculously lame" LOL. I just can't believe these aren't either complete exaggerations or mistakes.

Edit: Interestingly, the gt3 owner says that in track mode the throttle response improves. I thought track mode only controlled traction control settings and gauge cluster.

Thats correct.

My experience from the OG was that throttle response from idle is particularly sluggish in the OG car, once you are moving its great, after 4k its amazing.

If you read all the material about throttle response, its almost entirely about emission reduction.

The gr86 _does_ have a better map. They provided this graphic to show how they changed it from the BRZ (I assume that is initial, but BRZ could of further modified it too). I also assume this is from idle, but there is a lack of info on that.

Hoping CSG Mike and others can chime in on throttle response and rev hang. This is pretty sad news for me. I just sold my ND2 Miata thinking the GR86 would be the practical definitive answer for me. But if throttle response and rev hang are too much, I dont know...

I will say, the N/A Porsches have lightning throttle response and very light flywheels so the effect is exaggerated. I’d heard rev hang specifically isn’t bad at all on this car so I’m not too worried.

I don't think it's as bad the the guy made it out to be. The gt3 is an extreme example to compare it to, but it's what he's used to.

Compared to a cable throttle and lighter flywheel, yea it's going to feel a bit sluggish. For what it's worth, I don't find the revhang and response as bad as they're making it out to be. Every car is different and you kind of have to adapt.

I remember there being throttle controllers for the previous gen that improved throttle response. Maybe that'll be a patch solution if it really doesn't suit your taste. Plus, these cars were always meant to be modified. What better than an excuse to buy another part when the mod bug bites ?

Ok so I cheated on my break in a little bit and revved the car to 4500 (rip engine), and I've changed my mind.

Under 4k, when grandma driving the throttle is sluggish and often somewhat unpredictable. However, once you get the motor revving, it REALLY sharpens up and the motor picks up a lot faster.

To be fair, my Miata is also the same way. It's tuned for top end power so off of idle and low revs, it doesn't feel nearly as responsive or as fast as when it's in the 3.5k+ rev range.

With this new info, I'm not worried the slightest about throttle in my BRZ anymore. Even worst case I'm sure a tune could sharpen it up even more.

EDIT: Also it seems the higher you rev, the less rev hang there is. We should really be having this discussion after our cars are broken in.

Considering that NONE of the good car reviewers or even fringe car reviewers have brought up this topic, I suspect we have ONE guy who is nit picky and we're making a mountain out of a mole hill.

Let's not get our knickers in a twist eh?
