The only thing that touches my engine is Super Blue. If I absolutely had to substitute something else, it would be another blue coolant since that's how manufacturers typically differentiate chemical composition.

Subaru uses different corrosion inhibitors than most. There's a reason Toyota carries a blue coolant now.

There are plenty of coolants that match the spec of the car. I use Millers Alpine Red extended life antifreeze.

It needs to be OAT and low in phosphates, borates, nitrates, amines and silicate free. The millers doesnt have any of them and is OAT. Its probably better than the subaru blue tbh.

I'm sure it's better than what Subaru specifically had formulated for their own engine.

Rubbish. Its the same blue stuff they've had for years. As long as it is the same specification as what they spec, which is in a previous post on this thread, its fine.

Thats like saying the Toyota 0W20 oil is specifically formulated for this engine, which of course it not but as long as you use an oil to the same spec as the Toyota/Subaru recommend it works well if not better.

Each to their own of course but there's nothing special about a bit of water, some glycol and a few acid modifers for a longer life...

I'm not saying you can't use another phosphate/non-amine coolant. I'm saying that for obvious reasons I trust their own coolant with their own blend of corrosion inhibitors (which is proprietary information) far more with their own engine.

Its better to keep oem. I agree. Some of the other fluids leave residue.

Fair enough but the reason toyota carry the blue as well as the pink stuff is to do with the blue formulation being silicate free for the subaru engines.

Toyota Super Long Life (Pink) is also silicate free.
