Rear seat removal (also: tall drivers)
Full disclosure: I never owned a Gen 1 car, so I can't comment on differences in Gen 2 cars from personal experience, only what I've seen online.
I'm around 6'4"/6'5" tall, and have found that the drivers seat won't recline far enough for me as it hits the rear seat. I had been debating pulling the rear seats out, but this sealed the deal. I've found what I think is a good driving position now, with the extra reclining possible with the rear seats removed. Time will tell. The rear seat removal itself seems quite similar to the Gen 1 removal, based on what I have seen from videos. One bolt for each seat, and a bolt on each side for the back. I have not removed the seatbelts/brackets yet - maybe this weekend. The only difference I've seen is that there are seatbelt/weight sensors present, which I didn't see in videos of Gen 1 cars. Easy to unplug, no big deal, no warning/bongs when the car is on (although I haven't driven it since - still waiting on my winter tires - if it causes any issues I'll pull the sensors from the seats, plug them back in, and tape them down - doubt this will be necessary). Worked out quite well I think. Now to remove the seatbelts, and put a bit of foam/felt down so the wife has a place for her purse. Also, I have the Subaru cargo tray coming soon, which should finish off the trunk nicely. Please excuse my little winter tool kit in the back of the last picture - never know when you may need a shovel/cones/highvis/etc...

I've never heard of anyone having that problem. Maybe the front seat backs are thicker on gen 2?
Also, I recommend at least a cargo net or something back there to keep trunk stuff from flying forward. Also, it's going to get quite a bit louder from road noise, the cushions are/were great at absorbing the sound. How do I know this, you ask? Well: (1st Gen, but I wonder if it would work for 2nd.) |

Cargo net is a great idea, thanks!
Not sure on seat back thickness. Mine is a base model, so cloth rather than leather seats, if that makes a difference.

This is awesome! I love the storage space. Maybe sometime in the future I will copy this idea for mine.

Yeah, I have been meaning to put up a DIY how-to post, but that's a lot of effort lol. My one regret was using the "U" edge trim instead of wrapping in carpet or something.

Just like the first gens the cloth vs leather/alcantara doesnt really make a difference in the actual seat design but the seats were redesigned a little for the second gen. They're definitely wider (upper shoulder portion is most noticeable). and i think they are a little thicker too |
