Use a teflon or molybdenum lubricant.

WD40 is for displacing water. Not the right product.

Went to the dealership today for the issue. It was fixed, but I realized that the other sound was coming from the rear passenger seat. With seats folded down, the noise is gone. Hopefully in the future Subaru adds an edit to the TSB.. for now spray grease it is.

So did Toyota ever truly release an official service bulletin on this or are they still simply throwing lube and punching sheet metal?

Had the same thing found the rear seat hinges at bottom of seat (where it pivots down) were making the noise, Bit of teflon lubricant in hinge on bracket noise gone for now

That is the official service bulletin. That's how you fix metal creaking noises caused by welding splatter.

I have rear deck/trunk noises that I haven't quite figured out yet.

Tried the flex & lube, nope. Used foam tape to hold my license plate in place in the frame and tight to trunk, nope. Zip tied the light cable to the trunk lid, nope. Put a piece of foam tape between light cable and rear deck edge, nope. Used double sided tape to hold the plastic edge of rear deck tight to the metal it butts against, nope.

Tomorrow, going to check the plastic clips under the trunk foam and perhaps the wireless transmitter. The noise is definitely like something loose and rattling. It only happens at about 55mph and above and is constant at those speeds on any road surface.

I don't quite hear it if I have the stereo fairly loud, but that doesn't work if I want to talk to a passenger or just listen to engine music.

I haven't done anything about the popping, and over time it has definitely gotten better on its own. It still happens but nowhere near as badly as it used to.

My popping has now completely gone away on its own. I guess whatever was rubbing finally wore down.

After I posted above, I popped out the foam in front of the spare. The white clips seemed like a possible cuplrit, so I stuck them in place with RTV. I also wondered about the gas door cable, so I put several pieces of foam tape between it and places where it hit sheet metal. I also zip tied it in 2 places to other things so it couldn't move as much. Did a few other minor foam tape or RTV things and put it all back together.

Something is quieter than it was, but it isn't the @#$#^! rattling!

I think I'm going to have to pull the rear deck. I'm okay with other sounds the car makes, but this one is annoying.

Is it in the trunk? I did a slight tweak in this post that might help:

Also, this car has tons of rattles. So far I've notice rattles from passenger side window switches, that piece of plastic at the very front of the dash (Windshield vent). And some fan near the driver side (?).

The emergency release was flopping about a few weeks back, so I made sure it was in proper position. I didn't stick it down with anything, but I think I will. Seems unlikely with the amount of motion in has when in position, but I'm beyond trying one thing at a time to narrow it down.

I've gone to shotgun approach to shutting this up!

I'll try bending the little tabs tomorrow too. Don't want pull the rear deck, but may do it anyway.

Check the link kodyo posted. I'm talking about the silver tabs indicated to bend with a pair of pliers.

I've tried the pry/lube and it didn't stop it. Plus the sounds I'm getting don't really match the description of the spot weld issue.
