High pitched whining only when clutch pedal is fully extended.
Hey guys. '13 FRS with 50k on the clock. I'm getting a high-pitched whining when the clutch pedal is fully extended from somewhere within the clutch/tranny/drive shaft area. Goes away completely when clutch is depressed. Happens both in neutral and while driving in gear. Been happening for about a month or two but has gotten louder recently. Was hard to notice over my exhaust initially but now when I start the car it is quite noticeable.
Taking it in Tuesday most likely but just looking for some thoughts. Tranny fluid replacement? TOB? Clutch? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you. |

Maybe flywheel. That's where all my noise comes from, but lots of moving parts in that area. Does it go away when you push the clutch in?

Sounds like your TOB is going out.
At 50k is when I started to hear a whirling sound just like you described. Mine lasted it 73k when it completely shot itself in the Taco Bell drive through. So.... if I where you I would start looking into doing that repair soon.

Ugh, this is not a club I want to be a part of. In the 7 years I've had it I've been in the idle dropping and stalling club (literally the day I drove it off the lot), the HPFP crickets club, the condensation in the rear tail lamps club (3 F'n Times!), the coil pack failure club, the valve spring recall club, and now this one. Hooray February '12 build date! |

Lol. I had the cracked tail light, crickets (though they have disappeared, havent heard them since last summer) and TOB. TOB started rattling at 48k, though by the looks of it it could have gone another 20K. Just didn't want it to explode and take a bunch of stuff out with it. Missed the valve spring recall by about 3 months thankfully.
Last car was a 2000 Accord i drove from 60k to 200k, and all i replaced was a heater control valve and a thermostat. Did the spark plugs at like 170k and they looked pretty clean. I did have to change all the shocks but that's because my dumb ass had eibach prokit lowering springs installed which made them all leak. Shortly after i sold it apparently the new owner had to replace a couple fuel injectors. That car was a total joke in terms of maintenance, amazing testament to Japanese engineering. Didn't handle that bad either after the springs. Since it was a stripped down DX, it weighed about the same as my FRS. No rear sway bar (lol!) so i installed a fat one from the Acura CL. |

Clutch cover plate could have a 5% chance of getting scared. When I did mine clutch and flywheel where in perfect condition. So I deem them good to stay on. However the shaft the TOB rides on was pretty rough up. But a bit of sand paper and red Scott brite made it good as new. If the damaged was greater I would have replaced that part. Which is only $140-ish and 4-5 bolt to remove simple fix really.
