First SCCA Autocross In STX!

Sunday was my first foray into SCCA autocross with the 86. After the shake down last weekend, I was anxious to see how the car would handle in the dry.

A few turns in, and as I predicted, the 245 RE-71rs had monstrous grip. The car felt much more lazy and it was quickly apparent I will need more roll resistance. My plan of attack is a Whiteline 22mm adjustable front bar and a Whiteline 16mm rear bar with 7kg springs. Don't mind the painter's tape numbers, I forgot you have to register the number you want with SCCA and you need to have your class marked on the car.

Brian came down to play in the Fiat 124 for SSM. He is swapping between this and the ND for SSM this year for testing, I like the Fiata better.

I haven't seen results from the event yet but as soon as I do I'll report back. I know there were two BRZs ahead of me in time otherwise I think I was faster than the rest of the pack. Lots of work to do to get the car and driver up to pace! I also picked up a new camera this weekend. Image quality is up and I really had fun making this film about the day. Enjoy!

Got my hands on the results, 3rd place! My goal is to be within .5 seconds of the front runners at the next event.

Thanks! More bike content is coming soon - hoping to hit the track with that in April or May.

Status Report!

I have been grounded with the flu for nearly 2 weeks which threw a bit of a wrench in my plans. I put together a quick vlog to talk about the next steps on the project. Tomorrow I'll be starting with the Sprint BBK installation and the oil cooler later this week.

Track Prep Part 1 - Essex Racing Sprint Big Brake Kit

I am looking at going to the track in a few weeks. In order to get the car ready I have a few parts left to install. First on my list, the Essex Racing Big Brake kit. I spent a fair amount of time researching the kits on the market and this is without a doubt my favorite. It is well engineered and uses superior components each step of the way.

The only part of the installation that was "tricky" was routing the brake lines. It was easy to get the lines twisted up but with a little work everything went right into place. Here is a shot of the lines correctly routed.

The template for the Essex kit indicated the TRD 15 spoke wheels would clear but I'm always apprehensive about brake kit templates. I've seen too many not scaled correctly and you get to find that out after you have the brakes on the car. Thankfully these wheels clear with PLENTY of room to spare.

This video summarizes my thoughts on installation and offers a little bit of my philosophy on brake pad selection. For pads I chose to run Porterfield R4-S for the street and autocross. When I go to track days I'll start change out the pads to Poterfield R4-1s. They have a lot of bite when cold and work great for time trials.

Perrin Oil Cooler & Cold Air Intake Installation

My track day deadline is closing in fast! Next on my list was the Perrin Performance oil cooler. I like a lot of elements about their kit, from the lines to the hardware everything is well thought out. Compared to some of the other kits on the market the cooler size is a touch smaller but for the foreseeable future I do not see a supercharger in this projects future so this should do just fine.

As soon as the lines were installed, I quickly realized there was no easy way to make the existing lines or sandwich plate work with the 2017 airbox. I had a 2016 airbox in my garage but that was not the shiny solution.

Install video for the oil cooler, nothing huge to report here, but some additional fun those that are interested in following the build series.

[ame="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cFC-y02YBok"]Perrin Oil Cooler Install![/ame]

After weighing all of my options I opted for the Perrin 2.75" cold air intake. It cleans up the engine bay, it is C.A.R.B. approved and looks cool (ya, I said it ). Not expecting much power from this but the tuning side of things does have me a little worried. Clearance with the oil lines is MUCH better.

Nothing earth shattering was discovered during installation but just like the oil cooler, props to Perrin for having a well designed product with detailed instructions.

It has been a minute since there has been an update to this thread, not much has changed other than more seat time! A few weeks ago I attended another SCCA event and got first place in STX! Whiteline Sway bars are in the mail to get things dialed in even more, expect more updates soon.

Still in love with these red Hypergrams too. I've also been contemplating wrapping the 86 since a good paint protection film costs just as much and I get a fun color change out of it.

When you do the video for the sway bar can you talk a bit about the front end link set up too.

Absolutely! This car is a bit tricky to get them set up right compared to my Miata.

I've gotten quite a few PMs and comments on the process of switching to E85 or back to pump gas so I made a video showing my process for this. Hope this helps someone looking to make the change!

Last weekend was my 3rd SCCA event for the year. I struggled with set up on this course, the fastest PAX car was an E-Street Miata. The design of the track favored a very large front bar.

July 8th, 2018 SCCA Autocross - Champ Event #7

Last weekend was the 7th Champ event of the year for the local SCCA club. It was a really hot day, ~95* ambient and the surface temp was well over 100*. Made some time to snap photos with the Good-Win Racing Fiat 124. I was really considering picking one of these up before I got the 86.

I've been lazy about getting good photos of the car but I am happy with how these turned out. I finally was able to capture the color of the wheels a little better.

The competition was really tight in STX. I managed to beat out the guy in second place by .020 seconds on my last run! I was only off the leader by .6, a much smaller margin that the previous events.

Overall I am really happy with how the car has been driving. The RE-71s are starting to feel cycled out at about 100 runs so I am thinking a new set will need to be ordered soon.

This weekend I will be install these coilovers and I'll be pairing them with some Verus Engineering Camber plates. This gives me just enough time to drive the car around a little before getting an alignment, autocross is next weekend!

That's a good suggestion, I'll post over there this weekend if I get the chance.
Any clunk noise on your top hats? Mine has lots of noise on the street after 500km of driving.

At first I had a bunch of noise, after I sorted out my endlinks most of the noise went away. I still notice clunks and pops but more than anything I notice road textures a lot more. NVH is not the best with camber plates but I deal with it at this point since I need the camber.
