Wall Street Journal reports 2.5 l engine

As many of you will have read already, at the recent dealership national sales meeting in the US Toyota announced that the FT-86 is to be sold as a Scion, and will have a 2.5 l engine. I know little about Toyota engines (beyond the fact that the 2.4 l in the 2009 Corolla of a relative is boring and sounds horrible, and that Lotus employs Toyota engines in its sports cars to good effect.) Anyone care to speculate on what the implications will be for the hp/ torque/ area under the curve?

PS - apologies for the username, could not resist given the recent news.

not going to happen,

Wallstreet Journal is notorious for giving very inaccurate information in regards to the automotive industry.

a 2.5liter Flat-4 Subaru boxter engine might not be a viable alternative to the North American Market only, because it would only give an unwanted price hike on a car that Toyota wants to offer as affordable. If sold as a scion, it would definitely not happen as it would upset sales causing the "suffering" Scion and Toyota some serious damage to their already tainted name from this past year with the recalls. This has happened before in the late 90s with many Japanese car makers, I strongly believe that they would not make the same mistake with large pricing differences via internationally.

Adding a Toyota 2.5liter non flat-4 engine into the FT86 chassy would undoubtedly cause some problems in the north american market, which would probably boost Subaru sales, seeing as how as a partner developer they also have a FT86 in the works for the international market.

If Toyota pushes this branding to Scion there will be trouble.

The same went for Nissan's GTR, the rumor went for many years that the GTR will be sold as an infinity. This could have caused various problems internally, especially with a larger overhead cost for an infinity brand. If Toyota had produced the LF-A to be sold with a larger consumer market under the name Lexus they would have lost a tremendous amount of money because nobody wants to associate the overhead costs for the brand name. The fact that limited number of LF-As were sold prior to being released on their due date negated that reality thus eliminating that risk.

Its been said since the start, 2.0. Even the concept car specs say that. (Also notice it says Toyota not scion)

Well Autoblog seems to think the story may have some merit, it's run with it. We'll know soon enough.

I have sent several e-mails to Toyota.com. Reps over there are like DUMASSES. They don't even know what's going on in the company.( or are they pretending?) I really want to know clearly which brand the car in now. Actually, I'm not believing WSJ BS, but I don't feel comfortable with that. I will roll in 370z if Toyota can't give me what I want.
