Said he was trying a new type of release agent.

At any rate he replaced the gun with a new 452 and bedded and tuned it. Nothing on the new gun is as good as the first. The wood is, I guess, close. But everything else seems "cheaper" somehow. The bluing, the machining on the action. I've been so heartsick about trying to gild the lily and thereby losing the first rifle that I haven't even shot the second one. It certainly killed any regard I had for the smith, and the quality of the new rifle cooled my enthusiasm for the brand. I bought an Annie MPR to replace it. It shoots amazingly well, much more accurate than the first 452, but it's not the same.
Omg that’s terrible. I’m so sorry. I’d be heartsick too.

I think I bought my first 452 Trainer right around that same time. I never scoped it so I couldn’t say how accurate it was. I enjoyed using that long eye relief ladder sight so much, was really satisfying to just plink with.

Yeah. They all seem to have their quirks. I’ve had to work on each one a little, in some way, to get them to tighten up. I haven’t held any of the 457 series yet, but I’ve heard they’ve addressed a number of small issues with that generation.

I have to admit, the 457s have caught my eye. My wife, however, has looked in the gun safe and declared it full. Anything that comes in will have to replace something that goes out. I need to shoot the 452. I was polishing the first one to shoot rimfire silhouette. Covid has put a damper on much of that. There's a chance that despite its flaws the new one will be a shooter. If it's not, it's the likely candidate for the block.

A 457 could be its replacement.

Yep. I don't have ready access to a large patch of property to do much plinking, pretty much have to go to the range and plink at paper and clay birds. The problem has been the periodic runs on ammo. After the last one I bought about 6k rounds of Federal automatch for my Ruger MKIII for shooting steel challenge stuff.

@TommyW.

I bought several bricks of target ammo for the Annie - her "refined palate" doesn't like the taste of common stuff. At the same time I picked up a pretty good stash of 9mm ball, 45 ACP ball, and cheap .223 for the 5.56 AR. The rest I handload for.

I find handloading to be really meditative. If you haven't tried it, I recommend it.

Oh man the struggle to find ammo. It's the worst. It took me 6mo to stockpile some .45 and .380 for my pistols. My go-to has been luckygunner.com for ammo (no I'm not a bot lol). Locally it's damn near impossible unless I wanted to pay an extra $10-20 over msrp or what it used to run.

I miss plinking. I had a Ruger 10/22 when I was a kid with the long banana magazine and boy it was a blast! But we also had enough land for it to be safe.

Yup. I’m in that same boat regarding the safe, although my wife isn’t aware of what we have at any given moment. I actually sold a few things last year, moving away from collecting, and more toward recreational paper punching and trap.

Can I ask what ammo you typically shoot in competition these days?

The only competition I’ve done recently is .22 steel challenge stuff. My son and I were looking to try our hands at idpa/ipsc in the spring of last year but that’s on hold for now.

I built a .260 Rem several years ago with the intention of using it for F class. Haven’t shot it in a match yet. Not sure when I’ll have a chance. The only 600 yd range around is, I think, closed.

For the 9mm pistol games I use 147gr Berrys or one of the coated bullets over TiteGroup powder.

In the 260 I run a 142gr SMK over H4350.

For now I just punch holes. Lol

Few more rimfires:

These were neglected little gems that I picked up very cheaply from a junk store years ago. Both had been severely neglected and had to be taken to bits. The Remington had several broken/missing parts, and the stocks on both were shot. Numrich had me covered for all the small parts, and since I was into them for so little, I went ahead and steamed/stained and refurbished the stocks. The metal was decent on both so I haven’t touched that.

The Remington model 12 is pretty standard, but the other has been harder to nail down. I think it’s some strange flavor of Savage 29a. It has a very low serial number, and the only other marking is RANGER, scribed across the left side in flowing cursive script. The blueing is a very attractive plum/grey color. If anyone knows more about that I’d be happy to hear it. I’ve never been able to figure out exactly what it is.

Very nice. I like those older 22s. I have the 22 semi auto I learned to shoot with. It is a mess. It languished in a remote corner of my father's garage for decades under a layer of dirt and ultimately, rust. I've gotten most of the rust off, but there is none of the original bluing left.

I have been meaning to buy a decent .22lr rifle, the only things in .22lr I own are my Rugar mark 4 target pistol, and an old tube mag rifle I was given a long time ago.

17HMR is popular over here for sage rat hunting. There are thousands of acres of alfalfa fields and the land owners want you to come out. They tear up the fields pretty bad.
