Yeah I should’ve written down what I measured.

Aye.

I also don't think you need me to interpret anything.

It's a pretty simple litmus test: if thermometer reports temps above ~350F, you're probably good.

If cannot get thermometer to report 350F, then further investigation is required.
You might not be able to get a good reading from the top of the engine bay due to line of sight being blocked by the heat shielding. Not sure. You might have to jack the car up or put it on a lift while still hot.

Also, might be a good idea to do the same test on another vehicle for a baseline, as mentioned before. Just so you get an idea of how it works

That’s exactly what I’ll do! Thanks

I hate cats. They eat native wildlife so if you want to burn a cat go right ahead but I have no idea how common the practice is.

A little late with that water. I think the cat would rather have been punched out than burned up. I wonder if "catless" headers offend him

Those optical temp guns read in a cone. At that distance you are not picking up anything of use. You need to pull the lower pan off and check it from up close, maybe within 6 in max.

Once again late to the party, if it is a bad cat then it is covered by fed replacement requirement law.
(May not be required if extensive exhaust modifications have been done)

EPA requirement is 8 years or 80K miles. All emission control devices have mandated federal warranties.

I write the emission control warranty statement for the equipment we build here at my work.
