It's a pretty large debate, but I doubt many people living in their own homes truly need AC, it's not a life or death situation. The only people that actually require AC would be those that live in apartment buildings that are unable to utilize any kind of air flow turning every unit into a sauna.

Ok. So I'm in Chicago in a newer built home (don't get me started... so many issues) - '03/04 to be specific. Standard 25'x125' lot, house is ~20' wide. So we have 5-6 feet between houses, max. Happen to have a north/south orientation, north side still has a tree. On a good day I can see 3-5 degrees cooler than ambient IF we have a breeze and it's from a direction which hits. BUT. That same day the south side can be 3-5 degrees above ambient. Shutters help minimize. Now. Let's take a day like today. It's 86 out, no breeze. I have one failed A/C (lower levels, fortunately). With very careful use of fans AND the one working A/C I'm keeping the lower level rise under control - but the south side of the house is a good 5 degrees warmer, and nothing I can do about it. And if were were to run NO A/C? We'd see 10-15 degrees over ambient on the south side of the house. SO much heat is trapped back there even outside - stepping away from the house to the garage can be a huge temp drop, it's weird. There is just NO airflow today. Nothing I can do about it. And humidity rising.
So, it's NOT just apartment dwellers with no airflow. And why should they have bothered? It's cheaper to build this way, and hey, A/C saves the day.

Actually it can be a life or death problem and even if it isn't, it's a quality of life thing. But hey, you live where it's relatively comfortable year around. By all means, spend a summer in central or west Texas from July-Oct and you will be begging for AC.

Take a minute, and think to yourself, how much of what I said did you understand, then think, how many cases of having no AC would truly be life or death. You're acting as though if all of Texas did not have AC, there wouldn't be anyone left to make BBQ sauce.

Just really think about it, how much of AC is simply privilege and how much of it is needed to literally live. I totally get it, there ARE cases where AC is life or death (hospitals, factories, etc), but if you read into what I said, I did not say it was only life or death.

Most of it's privilege, just like you're privileged to come on the internet and argue about things that do or don't matter; just like you're privileged to think all the things you have are necessities.

It wasn't that hard, you acclimate. I did not have air conditioning in any place I lived or went to school until I was in college. Even then, my dorm rooms weren't air conditioned. (Grew up in NC, college in VA). Frankly I didn't notice or care.

Now if my house gets above 78 degrees I can't sleep. It's sad really.

Think about what you said. Think for a moment. You're from a privileged location that rarely gets hot weather. You make it sound like you've lived in a desert most of your life and that anything below 90 degrees is winter.

Now I know it's hard, but if you think really hard, do you honestly think you'd want to live more than a few days without AC where it's continuously 95 with a heat index of 101 and humidity of 50% in some places? I think that's hard for you, but just use your brain.

Ok great you got that? Cool. Now think about how people take for granted things like sleep and hydration and when you put them outside their normal comfort zone how well they adapt or better yet, know how to adapt. And expect them to know how to live without AC. Not a bunch of young people, but varying age groups who may or may not be able to handle it. Yeah, it's not that easy. People will die in their homes. So yes, it can be a life or death thing.

Well from a few people on here so far, seems like AC is now life or death in varying locations of North America.

*shrug*

Normal life. There are plenty of things we have now that folks survived fine without for thousands of years. You know, like electricity, refrigeration, food, water, shelter....

Would most people die without ac? Probably not. Would they be able to live in the same manner as when they didn't have ac? Probably not.
