Lowered compression NA tuning questions
Its been over a year and I'm finally getting my brz back! After spinning a bearing and a long road the decision was made to just build the motor a bit, seeing how it was already open and parts needed replaced anyway. We swapped out the rods and pistons with some other miscellaneous parts to beef it up in preparation of future boost.
Originally I wanted to turbo first then build the engine but that didn't work out so now I have a built motor and no fi. The thing is I now have 10.5:1 compression and won't be turboing for at least a year or 2 to save up and want to get the most out of it in the meantime. So questions; Is it fine to use the standard ots oft tunes with my 10.5:1 na engine? Would it just be a little less power but okay? Would there be any benefit to tweeking the tune for it? I plan on using the e85 stage 2+ tune with header and intake, and also saw some Crawford bpb for $260. Seems like from what I gathered this would be a good idea for some extra under the curve goodness and on their website they say gains are even better with e85 although that seems conflicting with some of the posts iv read on here about the bpb. I remember someone saying they use the stage 2 e85 with them and there great. But the real question here is what happens with the lower compression I have? Would they be less effective or even a bad idea? Or could it even be better with lower compression? Any input is greatly appreciated! |

will certainly feel more sluggish
No problem in using ots but i would at least do a bit of maf scaling and raise the timings |

So I'v been doing some research on adding timing and it seems like I basically won't knock untill it's extreme especially using e85 with 10.5. By then I'll have long hit a point where I don't benefit from further timing and gain no more hp (ideally I'd have dyno access but I don't). What should I be looking for on when to stop then?

for a plateau of torque (MBT) when you advance timing
When timing are too advanced you lose torque, so then you substract some if a stock 12.5:1 fa20 usually reaches maximum timing with E60 , a lower compression it reaches the MBT probably earlier with E50 You'd need higher compression, like 13.5:1 to benefit more of the E85 on NA i don't know why you have to use a low compression engine , you are just losing power and efficiency you gain headroom for power going lower compression just if you add a lot of boost |

Thanks that makes perfect sence. My engine builder advised going to 10.5:1 since I wanted to turbo in the future. Weather it was actually nessacary or not I'm not sure but I figured why not, everything thing i'v learned said it's good for less knock and it's more boost friendly

then it makes sense, it will help a lot if you aim for big boost and big power
