Looks like Tada finally confirmed the 2.0T option. Now if only we could get that with a manual...
I wonder how much the 4 cylinder version will be? 265hp and 3100lbs. Possible for a 38kish base price?

My hope is that with a 4 cyl it may squeak in under 3000lbs. A tunable turbo, under 3000lbs, under 40K, with a manual would be enticing IMO. One can dream.

Why would they change the name of the car to GT86 if its a Supra with a 4 cylinder engine? Doesn't make sense.

Only facts. Did you look at the referenced material or just post this remark? The material said "Supra (GT86;J29)" If Toyota were to keep the Twin 86, why would they also use that designation for the Supra? Think about it....

If you think this logic is wrong, please tell all of us your analysis....

I'm holding my breath with you brother. I wouldnt mind picking up something like that in a couple years after all the growing pains get sorted out.

This is a manufacturing designation, not the name of the car. You're right, it wouldn't make sense to use this name. If I were to hazard a guess, they would call it "Supra" with some sort of trim designation. Perhaps, this will be the base Supra and the 6 cyl model with be called the Supra GT. Who knows?

Nothing up to this point has given us any strong indication that this engine is bespoke in any way. Information from Toyota employees has been widely inconsistent and illogical. Perhaps some of that is due to poor translations.

Doesn't really matter though. No manual no care. Would rather boost a BRZ.

It may be a internal company naming error, J29 for sure is the name of the supra.

Also the japan times in april published some rumors saying the next gen 86 will be 2021 and powered by the FA24. Also subaru and toyota relations were still strong.

This is definitely a lower tier supra using the B series bmw 4 cylinder.....

It's not like its impossible for Toyota to offer a manual option after the first year.

Kinda interesting... so Toyota will have the GT86 as the lowest end, then 4cyl Supra in the middle, and topped off with the 6cyl Supra.

If that is actually the plan, I dont see it lasting very long. Theyre going to have to cut either the GT86 or 4cyl Supra eventually, no way they'll get enough sales split between those two models.

Again this is assuming all the price rumors are right too.
