Comparison to the MX-5 Engine
Well, I didn't know this before but the current engine in the MX-5 is a 2.0 L direct injected 4 cylinder engine. The MX-5 is also found in a RWD configuration. Therefore, this seems like an ideal comparison to the upcoming FT-86 engine.
The specs for the MX-5 engine and vehicle performance: 167 hp @ 7000 RPM (Redline = 7200 RPM) 140 ft-lbs of torque @ 5000 RPM 10.8:1 CR Bore x stroke (mm) = 87.5 x 83.1 Displacement = 2.0L Curb weight = 2511 pounds 0-60 according to Car & Driver = 6.7 sec (MT est) Base Price $23,560-$30,100 Geez, I think the FT-86 is starting to sound like a hardtop MX-5 with a backseat. I wonder what kind of tricks can be pulled off to make this thing unique. Higher rev limit? Aggressive tuning? Low weight? Higher CR? Of course, we know none of these things for the FT-86 so I'm just adding to the speculation. I'd like to think the FT-86 will come with a baseline of 200 hp, but how? |

200 hp will be a piece of cake, but it will depend on what they decide for trade-offs between power, economy, driveability and reliability. |

and those are the main reasons why I'll be retracting my previous statement hah. It really will boil down to what Toyota wants from the engine. In the end, I don't think it'd be to hard to make more power with this engine, if they decided to go with less power / better economy.

I think it will be 100hp/L just so people won't have to listen to Honda owners yammer about their motors getting better power to displacement than the new Toyota. (no offense to S2000 owners, 120/L kicked ass)

One thing I can say about the NC engine, after I added a Fujita intake and removed the muffler and replaced it with 2.5" straight pipe. The car pulled really hard which I would attribute to the torque of the motor. I can't explain how it felt exactly but it felt similar to when a turbo car gets into it's power band. There are dynos of NCs with intake, headers, full exhaust, and tuning(via snipertune software) making 170-180hp to the wheels. Plus there is quite a bit of parts from cosworth.
